Wearing White The Right Way

White is one of the most difficult colors to deal with in the fashion and beauty world. There are appropriate times to wear it…and well, some not so appropriate. There are “rules” that say you should only wear it from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but should you really stick to those guidelines? My opinion is a bit more on the lenient side. I think it’s a good idea to stick to the rules within reason. They can be broken the right way, like with Gwenyth Paltrow‘s white Tom Ford dress she wore last night at the Oscars. There are also some aspects of wearing white that should be kept under restriction, white jeans being the number one culprit. I have seen SO many girls wearing white jeans lately. They have been wearing them since the beginning of the month! It is just not white jean season yet, ladies. I am all for wearing white tops, accessories, and makeup, but I have to draw the line at white pants. Now, with that being said, I don’t think you have to wait until the end of May. Save me some gasps and cringes by at least waiting until Spring Break time: end of March, beginning of April. Then you are in the clear! So now that my little rant is over, here are some of my favorite right ways to wear white right now!

As far as accessories go I think white jewelry is in the clear for the current season. This ASOS Chunky Link Necklace in White is so fresh and would perfectly offset a bright or busy top. I love the thick chain link trend that’s been showing up a lot lately. It’s very playful and young, but still really chic and modern. I have also noticed that a lot of the current jewelry trends are more structured, shorter necklaces being a part of that. I have always been a little bit hesitant to wear necklaces that come closer to my neck, but I am totally ready to give it a try!

Another option to satisfy your white craving until Spring is nail polish. After solely using Essie and OPI for several years I have been trying out some new polish brands. Julep is one that I am currently loving, and their lacquer in Brigitte is fantastic! You can use this to create a french mani or do some awesome nail art, but you can also just paint your whole nail white. I know, it sounds scary at first, but it looks so good! You could put chunky silver glitter on your ring finger as a contrast to give the white a total glamorous vibe.  If you can’t get ahold of Julep, OPI’s Alpine Snow or Essie’s Blanc would work equally well!

White tops are another thing that is always in season! I am really into loose and flowing tops right now, and this Free People Gypsy Rose Top is just beautiful! Free People has some of the cutest boho chic pieces, and this shirt is no exception. It cinches at the waist so it would flatter any shape, and it would look great with some of your colored jeans. A top like this is essential to any wardrobe so go ahead and spend a little extra on it!

There is a fine line you walk when using white eye liner. Starch white liner mixed with extra frosty shadows leaves you looking like a crazy snow princess. In case you need clarification, that isn’t a compliment! The right way to work with white liner would be taking a pencil like the NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Santa Monica Blvd. and applying it to the inner corner or bottom lash line. Applying white liner to your waterline on the bottom will bring out the white of your eye. This makes your eyes look bigger and cancels out any redness you might have from lack of sleep or allergies.

The one white item that everyone MUST have is a plain white tee. Madewell’s V-neck Pocket Tee in Optic White would be perfect! This is another piece you really need to invest in. A white tee is such a basic item that can be used in so many different looks. This particular tee is really soft and comfortable, a must when it comes to a white top!

What is your take on the white rules? What is the right and wrong time or way to wear it?!
