#2375356 Memebox: Korean Beauty Box Service

Posted by MissJexie on 31 January 2015 - 06:23 PM

So I'm not a mod anymore, but I can at least say The overall group of users and the general discussion on this thread were not the issues- it was a group of specific users that were consistently causing a problem that also frequented this thread. There were also issues earlier on in this thread when it was at it's peak, where users were ignoring moderators requests to follow the rules, people ganging up on the staff, refusing to allow more organized change to happen etc. Back when we wanted to do a monthly Memebox thread so it wasn't too overwhelming to read, we were not supported by the users of this thread and our ideas to make the memebox forum more streamlined were ignored.

There was even a time earlier in this thread where a multitude of users (some of whom still frequent this thread) ganged up on me tirelessly because a user asked me a question about shipping. My response at the time, was that I recieved boxes complimentary in exchange for review, so I wasn't well versed in shipping costs etc. I was then attacked for "bragging" about getting free boxes etc. So much so, that whenever I tried to post, someone would jump on me.

It got to the point where I actually left the thread entirely for over a month due to the harassment (some of you may vaguely recall it.) I was not supported by the higher ups here on MUT in any way, and it was pretty disheartening.

There have been an absurd amount of issues behind the scenes in regards to this thread. Moderators constantly getting PMs (including myself) about petty drama and bickering, people messaging me asking me to deal with drama that had nothing to do with makeuptalk at all, among other things. The report center was ALWAYS filled with reported posts from this thread...I truly could go on and on.

Sometimes, things aren't always openly obvious to everyone, but I can tell you first hand the amount of stress and drama that this thread has caused me personally since I started it a year ago. That's not to say I haven't met some absolutely fantastic ladies and had a good time here as well, but unfortunately, this thread was kind of the beginning of an endless slew of issues that the moderators here faced, and no matter how many times we tried to implement solutions to the problems, they were always ignored.

This isn't to point fingers at anyone, or even this thread in general, just hoping it clears some things up because I feel like many of you deserve to know why fingers are pointed in this threads direction, especially those of you who have had nothing to do with any issues.

#2342441 Secret Santa 2014 Reveals

Posted by kawaiiwoofs on 02 December 2014 - 03:41 PM

My gift is here!!

Thank you SO much @angienharry this is seriously the PERFECT gift for me!!! You are amazing and I am so grateful to have such a magical Santa :)

Wrapped like giant candy!!

AWESOME gift. Love the fuzzy socks - put them on immediately! I'm a huge sucker for cocoa so this mug and mix will go to great use. She sent a great assortment of tea and an infuser. Also, my HG Eyeko eyeliner - which I JUST ran out of. bee kind lotion which I've basically been obsessing over since I got it in a birchbox. Most needed bamboo utensils - a bunch of mine got warped over thanksgiving. And finally, indie eyeshadow and dry shampoo! The eyeshadow is from Beauty Bar Baby and it's super pretty shimmery neutrals - excellent choice :) PLUS THEY HAVE PINUPS ON THEM!

Thank you thank you @angienharry !!

#2292399 Birchbox September 2014 - Spoilers!

Posted by Moonittude on 19 September 2014 - 10:59 AM

I can't believe they even found my apartment. It's in such a weird spot, that the mailman can only find it 60% of the time. Also, I'm on the West Coast and they did not call me on the phone at all. I'm sure my mouth dropped open when I saw her Birchbox t-shirt. I didn't even manage to get friendly until she was about to leave. I was too shocked. My dog totally barked at her. I was going to hold the dog for the picture, but she wouldn't stop barking, and anyway there was too much swag to hold.

When the picture of me gets posted, be gentle. I am suffering a hive outbreak and am on some steroids, so I wasn't even dressed, yet. My hair might be crazy. You guys will love me anyway, right?

Here is what they gave me:

A Birchbox tote bag - might be my favorite part, I am a dork

pink balloons

bouquet of roses - I would have been happy with just that much, you guys.

LE Mermaid box - I already bought this. It is awesome. I told my mom I would share with her if I won, and she loves mermaids

Jouer It bag kit - I already bought this too. It is also awesome.

CW box - I didn't have this yet, and I love the pink nail polish I will totally wear it today

Smashbox Full Exposure eye shadow palette with mascara - I haven't even opened this yet, too busy giving you guys the scoop. It looks really pretty.

Posted by Noel S. on 05 November 2014 - 04:39 PM

I am so bored that I am making up imaginary box combinations:

Box 1- Five Lorde and Berry glitter eye pencils.

Box 2- Nothing but foil packets of shampoos.

Box 3- Four different Harvey Prince perfumes and a baby skunk.

Box 4- Is exactly the same as the holiday hacks box except the candle is red. Go figure.

Box 5- All of the PYS choices- cuppa, amika, juice peel thingy and no soap radio stuff and a red candle. Note this is going out to every person who picked a sample, unless you marked that you don't like perfume. If so see box number 3, as your sample choice was lost somehow.

I had the most amazing Santa ever!!! @meaganola completely spoiled me! I am so overwhelmed by her generosity! I love everything! I am at a loss for words so I will try and be as coherent as possible.

So I am going to be honest, from the beginning I had a feeling that @meaganola was my SeSa. There was a Loki comment and then a comment that something from the espionage kick starter would have been perfect for her SeSa and I immediately thought of the Sherlock nail wraps. What threw me off for awhile though was you said your SeSa was a sweetheart and I'm like nahh that"s not me then! lol I just can't help myself from trying to figure everything out. It's my Sherlock obsessed mind going to work!

Ok so picture time! My photos turned out so crappy thanks to my iPhone and bad lighting, also PLEASE ignore my paint splattered chipped manicure! I plan on doing a manicure later! (With some new gifts!) THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH @meaganola !!! You are the best!!!! I am so overwhelmed by your generosity! Posted by tulosai on 26 September 2014 - 03:49 PM

I had to edit the f-word in that response for MUT!

Here's my edited response to that one:

My Name

Sep 26 13:52

I have ordered a ton of sxxt from your shop! I am simply asking for a tracking number for my anti-aging box that should have shipped out on September 5th! All I get is that when it ships out I will get a response, and a tracking number. FXXX XXU! That doesn't answer my question. Why hasn't it shipped out on the 5th of September??????????????

and then Jill's last response:

Jill (Memebox.com)

Sep 26 14:10

Your order has been shipped out on Sept 5th and is on its way. Sometimes it takes awhile to clear customs, but your package will be delivered shortly.

Thank you for your patience :)

Memebox Global Team

So I finally emailed again asking for the tracking number!

At the risk of getting bashed here, and absolutely  as respectfully as possible to you since I understand their total non response is what has led you to talk to them this way,now that I see what you are writing them I think that what they wrote to you was less inappropriate than I thought.

I'd seriously advise you to stop cursing at them in emails, since when you do dispute charges, they can submit emails and you may have to.  Like it or not, these emails are not going to reflect well on you.  At the risk of also sounding like your mom or something, cursing at people is seldom the way to get them to do what you want.

While I get where the other person is coming from about the compensation and whether or lot everyone will get it -- like gg says you have to call them up and talk with them on it. They aren't going to proactively provide it for you even if it is 'just' or 'fair'. Sometimes you have to stick your neck out and risk it.

At the same time, GG, you sound like you have more time and money than you know what to do with. I'm envious, but at the same time your response actually comes off as being rather arrogant...

I know I'll speak for myself and say that one $10 box is my luxury spend on myself and I wish I could drop thousands in department store purchases but find myself feeling too indulgent if I spend $50 out of pocket for myself...

I'll go wade in my inflatable pool and drink my boone's farm now....

#2335189 Birchbox December 2014 (Spoilers)

Posted by deactivateduser232015 on 21 November 2014 - 10:38 PM

It's pretty funny but I think it misses why a lot of people subscribe.  For me it is how I give myself a treat every month.  It also has the added bonus of being able to try products in a very low pressure environment.  I can try something for a week without a salesperson trying to talk me into buying it.
Don't get me wrong, I laugh at myself when I'm devoting time to eliminating boxes each month.  In my mind, some people play angry birds, I have birchbox.

Hmmmmm after thinking on it a while, it actually did bother me. So I wrote a long response to it on their entry. XD I wonder if they'll reply. Probably not.

Tsk tsk this snark, Marketplace. Is it because the main audience of subscription boxes is women, therefore it's okay to take cheap potshots at them? I notice there aren't any equivalent reports about how many games the average gamer purchases, compared to the number of AAA games released a year, and how no one could conceivably give any game a fair play to keep up with the releases. And there we're even talking about an industry which women hold a 40% audience marketshare.

I agree that this subscription box thing has led to the accumulation of a lot of Stuff, some of which people don't want, but I think you've missed the reasoning of why people might decide to join a subscription service.
1) It is, arguably, a "gift" for yourself, but more importantly, it's also an opportunity to get a good "value" out of something. For $10 or $20 a month, you get to sample an array of products anywhere between 2-5 times the value of what you paid. Trends have shown that in economic recessions throughout history, women have turned to buying "little" luxury products like lipsticks (and now, nail polish) because it's both cheap and accessible, but also makes the consumer feel good about herself. Now the price of a lipstick is about $10 -- so why not put that towards a subscription where you can get a lipstick and 3-4 other beauty products to try as well?
2) The subscription box boom has been highly disruptive to the way the beauty industry works, where newer brands are able to gain inroads into audiences through non-traditional means. The American public is highly conscious and focused on on brands as a marker of quality and are highly loyal to brands, so subscription services create new opportunities to access an marketbase who might otherwise not otherwise want to try your product if it weren't already bundled along with a product they already know and like.
3) Subscription boxes are about curation, not accumulation. A subscription service isn't -shopping- for you. It's obtaining products, and making recommendations and curations based on what the service thinks  you might like. I don't subscribe to a wine monthly box because I don't drink wine. I'm not with a cheese of the month box because I'm lactose intolerant. Yes, it's "stuff" but who are you to make the judgment that it's less valuable to a subscriber paying for the service, than say, picking our your own video games to add to your 200+ games collection and not getting to play more than 2-3 a week?
Also, the fact that the innovators who really pushed this disruption forward -- the founders of Birchbox -- are two businesswomen who operate in a space where the majority of the decisionmakers, influencers, and people on the receiving end of the profit are MEN dictating how women should look and feel about themselves-- well, I'm not saying you need to be on their side, but it's a LITTLE unfeminist to say the previous status quo was somehow better.
Honestly, it seems like the reporter already had her own opinions about subscription boxes and just wanted to write quirky quips rather than exploring the business model of a disruptive and booming industry. If the critique is of accumulating stuff, there's plenty in there to discuss, but that's a separate issue apart from why people choose to subscribe to these services and what make them successful. It probably would've helped, you know, to talk to the owner of one of these services or I don't know -- maybe even someone who subscribes?

So, I don't really follow the affiliate thread much...And I don't think this has been posted here (if it has, sorry!) but congratulations @MissJexie for getting to host the next Haul of Fame.

It's nice to know you're getting some recognition of your influence in the Memeworld.

...Now, if only they'd let you do a collab box...Filled with 7 Seconds masks!    :D

Ok I have SO much to say since so much has happened since I left for work today LOL

First of all cfisher Thank you so so much for the kind words! :) It's been a HOT MESS for me so far regarding the Haul of Fame because the dates were getting messed up, they sent me the wrong item that wasn't in my choices, and still haven't replaced it with the correct one (and the sale goes live tomorrow at 12PST) so I'm going a bit crazy!! :D and LMAO My box would probably be MADE OUT OF 7 Second sheets or something that's how addicted I am! ;)

I got my From Jeju Box today...FINALLY. What the heck took this box so painfully long to get here? I'm still on the fence about it, but it's definitely leaning on the side of pretty good, but not amazing.

I am thrilled that Memebox finally got back to SOMEONE about box releases. I'm SUPER excited for Friday now! I've been hoarding my points like a crazy person! Once a week sounds honestly like perfection. I think 3 times a week was fun, but I was spending money i didn't have and was feeling overwhelmed as a blogger trying to keep up with the releases all the time. This sounds much more up my alley. Although I think they should do like 3-4 boxes per week rather than the typical 2-3 boxes per release.

Also...SO IMPORTANT that everyone reads this... After having such a horrible mess of a week, I got a mystery package in the mail today, and it was from cfisher!! It was FILLED (omg it was chock full) of sheet masks and samples and foot and eye masks...and an awesome candle and a makeup bag full of goodies and a lip gloss. Seriously, I started crying because it was the sweetest, most thoughtful thing in the world and I cannot say thank  cfisher enough for being the most kind and wonderful memepal! You brightened up my day/week/month! LOL <3   :hugs3:

#2366038 Birchbox January 2015 (Spoilers)

Posted by Jay.Aitch.Gee on 13 January 2015 - 01:31 PM

Ok, so my BB shipping saga has taken somewhat of an absurdist turn. Forget the Pony Express: I'm pretty sure Birchbox's "shipping partner" is a confused fifth grader trying to solve a word problem on a math test.

I have two subscriptions(one since Feb 14, one since Nov 14), and for reference I'll refer to them as box A and box B. (I find it helpful to label things after famous letters.)

Box B had a clicky truck and tracking mad early - on Jan 4 (!) - and then I got the shipping email on Jan 6.  Picture me making a fist and drawing my right elbow in while hissing "yesssssssss" a la Napoleon Dynamite.

Box A got a clicky truck on either Jan 7 or 8 - can't remember exactly, but it was late at night and I was a couple chardonnays in (SHUT UP MOM DONT JUDGE ME). I got a shipping email for box A on Jan 9.

Over the weekend (Jan 10 and 11) I obsessively checked tracking on both boxes, because that's what the cool kids do with their weekends, apparently. That and binge-watch four seasons of Homeland while thinking about perhaps getting a parakeet, but then deciding the cats will not react well to such an addition.

Yesterday I checked the tracking page on BB's site, which now estimated both boxes would arrive between January 17-19. I wrote a pissy little post about it here on MUT, pouted for a few more minutes, thought about getting a hamster (but again, the cats), and then decided to check tracking on the usps site.

What I saw there was both confusing and heartening. There were detailed itineraries of both boxes' meandering journeys from Tennessee to Indiana to New Jersey (wut?), and though box B initially left Tennessee at least THREE DAYS before box A, they met up in New Jersey and left the shipping 'facility' there on the same day at the same exact time (presumably holding hands): 6:10 PM on Jan 11.

It's a relatively short trip from New Jersey to get to me in Connecticut (both boxes get shipped to the same address), so I dared to hope that I might see my boxes before the 17th.

Then today, as I was wondering how the cats might feel about hermit crabs, I heard a knock on my apartment door, and there was the postman, holding TWO BOXES!!

But here's the really funny part: one of the two boxes was my December Glossybox ("lol here I am did u forget about me?" "No.....yes...I did."), looking somewhat self-conscious in a festive Holiday-patterned box, a Ghost of Christmas Three Weeks Past.

The other box WAS a Birchbox - box A, which, if you're playing at home, was the box initially shipped out 3-4 days AFTER box B. And which apparently came from NJ to CT in the same shipment as box B. On the USPS site, box A's last 48 hours since leaving NJ on Jan 11 at 6:10 are carefully detailed, yet, there is NO forward movement on box B since leaving NJ on Jan 11 at 6:10. Birchbox still estimates box B will arrive between the 17th and 19th.

I really didn't mean to write a whole friggin' epic here (the Birchboxiad), but isn't that just weird?? That the box leaving several days first arrives later? And that while the two boxes left the last shipping facility at the same exact time, they're arriving on different days??

"Box A leaves Tennessee at 5:18 AM Jan 8, and box B leaves Tennessee at 2:43 AM on Jan 5. If box A is travelling at 78 mph, and box B is travelling at 67 mph, how many glasses of wine will it take before still nobody gives a shit?"
