Trying to match someone via a picture if very difficult to do since the lighting in off and one person's monitor may be different than another in terms of how the colors look. To me you look to have a yellow undertone to your coloring but other than that I wouldn't attempt to tell you which MAC to try.

You can go into MAC and get shade matched in person to avoid spending money on the wrong products.

I am interested in finding out my MAC color just for comparison purposes - is it considered gauche to ask them to color match you and not buy anything from them?

I don't think so. Just tell them you'd like to be color matched and will possibly buy at a future date but you just want to make sure how the foundation lasts and how it oxidizes throughout the day before committing to a purchase.
