Hello All,

I somehow managed to go 27 years without giving a hoot about make-up in the slightest, but then the bug bit me.  Hard.  I've been a vegetarian for well over a decade and compassion for animals is a big thing for me.  Unfortunately, my head starts spinning when researching cruelty-free cosmetic companies and I can barely keep track of who owns who and who sells in china and it soon becomes a big blur.  This has left me sheepishly sticking with just a few "safe" companies, but I really want to expand.

I know there are a ton of amazing cruelty conscious beauty blogs out there, a lot of which keep their own lists and update them semi-regularly.  I'm not so much asking for you to throw links of beauty blogs at me (I can use google).  Instead, I'd like to know who your favorites are and why.  Do you prefer X blog because their cruelty-free list is the most up to date, or do you prefer Y blog because they have amazing tutorials and reviews?

Thank you in advance!

I know exactly what you mean.  It's hard to keep up with who's actually cruelty free and then the status changes and...  I've been a vegetarian since junior high and I'll admit my cruelty free status has come and gone in the past.  Thankfully now with all of the cruelty free resources I've found online, it's a lot easier to figure out and so it's a lot less frustrating staying cruelty free when buying cosmetics.

There's always the peta website of course and the leaping bunny program, but it seems like a lot of smaller cruelty free companies aren't represented on their lists.  I might be wrong about this but it seems like the accrediting for that list can be a little cost prohibitive for a smaller company.

My favorite cruelty free blog is mybeautybunny.  They have a wide range of products and they do a good job keeping their cruelty free list updated.  The blog also talks about animal testing updates, but it's not overwhelming or depressing.

I do like vampy varnish as well, but she's not completely cruelty free (there are some brands that now test in China that she still swatches).  However, her swatches are fantastic and she swatches a lot of brands.  I also like that for skincare products she shows how her whole face looks before and after.  Plus I respect how she's dealt with the China issue and she doesn't try to trick people about it or dance around the issue.  She also notes on each of her posts which brands are cruelty free and which aren't.

I read a lot of blogs, but as far as cruelty free goes those are my favorites.

Thank you so much for your input and suggestions, babycat!

I think I'm going to end up referring to mybeautybunny's lists as a starting point quite frequently, and I love the animal testing updates!  I'm interested in new animal welfare legislature and suspect that keeping myself apprised of new developments will only aid my quest to become 100% cruelty free.  Unfortunately, whenever I build up the courage to visit peta's website, I invariably see or read something that makes me feel sick and depressed for a good while afterwards.  (I'm really not in love with that particular organization's methods.)  It's nice to see a site with a more tactful method.

I know exactly what you mean about PETA.  It's so hard, because on the one hand I appreciate that when you go to their website you know that the companies that are on the cruelty free list have gone through all the red tape or whatever it is they have to prove to peta but oh the front page is very traumatizing.  It really is too much to take most of the time.  I know that horrible things happen to animals and I care about it, but I don't need to see it, because it ends of taking away a lot of the hope I have that things can get better.

I'm glad to hear someone else that cares about being cruelty free say that about their page though, because I've always felt a little guilty like maybe I just wasn't hardcore enough or something.

I agree about PETA as well.  Their methods are much too extreme and they end up alienating people.  They make you feel like the world is an evil place and there's no hope unless we eliminate all the bad people.

I prefer to support organizations who publish "look what we've accomplished this year" type items.

Cruelty free is part of the Idea behind my blogs name: Boxes With Bunny...Its also because I like the nickname bunny and my hubby calls me bunny and I call him bear...Gag I know but it makes my heart happy. Anyways I do not boycot non creutly free brands yet but I vote a lot with my wallet. The only non creulty free brand I buy right now is Cliniques BB cream because its the only foundation that doesnt make me break out and overall works for my skin.

Other than that I will buy beauty boxes and pay for shipping on samples but will not buy the product until it is cruelty free. So I will say things like wow that was a nice shampoo why do you have red dye #40 is that really helpful? No. Anyways I am hoping that my passive aggressive shaming will somehow make the world comply to my wishes. HEHE.

Do you think a full list of brands and maybe favorite products would be helpful? I was thinking of adding a list as I go. I also need to be more thoughtful about mentioning that a brand is creulty free on my videos.

I just did a review of Petit Vour.  I was super impressed. They are cruelty free and you get about 5 items per month for $15.
