Hi, I'm 23 years old and never wear makeup but I've now decided to start using it and was wondering what would be better for a skin care routine. My skin is combination, mostly oily with some dry patches... would love any product recomendation as well as what goes first in a skin care routine since I know healthy skin is important for makeup to look nice. Thanks!

Depends what your concerns are and how much you'd like to spend. I highly recommend Control Corrective. They have "kits" you can start off with to get a feel for the products (they're around travel size). If you're just starting out a skin care routine you don't want to over do it. Just cleanse, tone (let it dry) then moisturize. Then 2-3 times per week do a light exfoilant, it will help your skin stay caught up and help with the dry spots. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

If you're starting out with makeup I would suggest not spending too much money on products at first. This way you can see what you like and if you then want to invest in for example a foundation, you can.

I have got combination skin as well and I like to start of my routine by cleansing my face really well and then applying a primer. This will reduce the shine and make my makeup stay on all day. Then I use a tinted moisturizer if I don't want that much coverage or a foundation if I have some blemishes to cover up.

Make sure you keep it looking natural though!

Make sure to remove your makeup each night with a mild cleanser...I like philosophy purity. Also use a moisturizer (doesn't need to be heavy) morning and night. Morning routine should have an SPF or wear sunscreen separately or in foundation. You are young and the best thing you can do for your skin is to protect it. Also, look for healthy makeup. Lots of makeup contains chemicals. Brands to check out are bare minerals, tarte, 100% pure, red apple lipstick (they sell eyeshadow/mascara too), josie maran. Look for paraben free products. I've taken care of my skin since I was a teenager. I'm turning 40 this year...hardly any wrinkles...people think I look in early 30's or less.

Thanks to everyone for your advice :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I will surely try each recommendation to see what fits best with me. Makeup wise I just ordered bare minerals try it believe love it kit to see if the products work well with me before ordering the full sized products. I will definitely check out the brands you all mentioned too.

I recommend taking a look at the SkincareAddiction subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/

They have a beginner's guide to skincare here: http://np.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/wiki/beginners

It's a lot of information, but in general they have the right idea. Everyone's skin is different, so you really need to come up with a routine and combination of products that work for you (many good products are drugstore). Also, just a note - a lot of skincare companies make claims with no scientific basis and use "natural" ingredients that are not proven to work and may actually be harmful (a lot of plant products can be irritants, think allergy season and the fact that many people's seasonal grief is caused by plants; citrus oils are phototoxic and yet they are rampant in skincare products). A lot of people also talk about sulfates and parabens - if you aren't sensitive to these things, they are extremely unlikely to be causing any harm (unless if you eat your skincare products).

But basic answer to your question - definitely remove your makeup at the end of the day (never sleep in it). SUNSCREEN.

I suggest to have light makeup only. I know we are passionate about makeup but it is not too good. Natural look is always better and help you to have glowing skin forever. Also don't forget to remove makeup before sleeping...

And if you want to follow any skin care routine then start with home remedies or natural herbal products only... and if you are interested in clinical trial then I'll recommend Jarvis Cosmetics. Fundamental behind their product is Traditional Korean Medicine....

I feel you should not wear makeup on daily basis. But yes, if you are opting for it,then it should be in limit like highlight eyes more and less concentration on cheeks.

The best tips to care our skin is stop using the natural products which are not natural, but they can be sold by telling that they are natural. Stop using the oily moisturizer in your skin which is very harmful for health of skin, ditch the heavy night skin cream, put down the exfoliant, don't put on your face.

You can use cleansing milk to clean your face or you can also use the fresh milk without boiling it is the best way to clean your skin.

It is better to use a natural treatment with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. These treatments will have ingredients like Shea butter, jojoba oil, manuka honey and Functional Karatin, which contains proteins that act as an anti-inflammatory. Treating the inflammation is the key to dealing with acne.

Be sure to always wear sunscreen (every single day).

I use Eltamd UV Clear SPF 46.   It is sheer under makeup, (no ghostly cast) and it doesn't break me out.

Some great organic brands (perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin) are Jane Iredale, Afterglow Cosmetics, and Silk Naturals.  Beaux and ItCosmetics are also organic and have a lot of options that are very skin-friendly.

Mattify cosmetics also has a lot of products for oily, acne-prone and sensitive skin.

The main ingredients to look out for (in any product you put on your face) are: mineral oil, bismuth oxychloride, lanolin, dyes, coconut oil and alcohols.  ( Alcohols dry out your skin, causing it to produce more oil, and therefore can trigger more acne and breakouts.)  Paraffins, parabens, glycols, perfumes and talc are also very unhealthy for skin in general.

Here is complete list of 'bad' ingredients to avoid if you want your skin to stay clear...

Look for makeup that says Non-comedogenic on the label!

Also make sure to keep all your makeup brushes and tools clean.  ( Don't use sponges, they only harbor bacteria.)

As far as a regimen, I have suffered from my acne my whole life ( my skin is finally starting to calm down now as I'm in my late twenties, but I still get hormonal breakouts that time of the month), and most of what I've learned has all been trial-and-error.

But besides the tips above, I recommend the less products you pile on your face, the better.  (Also, the less ingredients a product has, the better!)

Don't cake on any more makeup then you have to.  ( I only use sunscreen, an organic concealer and an organic light, translucent finishing powder to help mattify my t-zone ).

To help keep your skin clear and healthy, make sure to wash it gently 2x a day with a salicylic gel cleanser.

*(Opt for gel cleansers instead of foaming ones, as the foaming ones can overdry your skin.)

I use Eileen Mai's Salicylic Acid cleansing gel

It has no alcohols or artificial ingredients, and the salicylic acid helps keep pores clean.

( Eileen Mai is an organic line, and they also carry a great spot-treatment, as well as a good cucumber masque.)

Regarding toners, make sure they are always alcohol-free as well.

I use Elavonne Organic Pore Refining Exfo-Toner (available on amazon).

There is also a great organic skincare line available on etsy called Yoshimomo

They carry a wide range of hand-made organic skincare products.  ( I especially like the AHA+BHA toner. )

YonKa also carries a nice alcohol-free toner as well.  ( They call it a 'lotion' but it's actually a toner. )  It's also available on amazon.

Regarding exfoliating, I exfoliate 3-4x a week with a gentle, organic exfoliating masque.  ( This ensures my skin stays smooth and it helps reduce breakouts.)  If you notice any sensitivity or irritation, only do it about twice a week.  (Exfoliating also makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so make sure to apply extra sunscreen.)

( No artificial ingredients, no alcohols.)  There are many masks similar to this (esp on etsy), just make sure they are alcohol-free.

(Fruit acids and enzymes, BHA and AHA are all exofliant names/types of exfoliants.)

( I personally stay away from products with exfoliating beads in them, as I find them too rough and damaging on my skin, and just unnecessary.)

When cleansing or applying a masque, I like to do it in the shower because the steam helps open up my pores more.

Lastly, regarding moisturizers, I use...

Earth Science Fragrance-Free Almond-Aloe Moisturizer

&

Mill Creek Botanicals 99% Aloe Vera Gel

(* both available at Walgreens)

These can be applied well under makeup or as a lightweight moisturizer (during the day or before bed).  I have never had any breakouts or irritation from them.

ALWAYS make sure to remove all makeup before bed.

But do not over-wash (or over-exfoliate) your skin.  (Doing so disrupts your skin's natural barrier and can cause real damage).

Wash your pillowcase often and consider getting an air purifier in your room/home.

Never leave the house without sunscreen. (even if it's cloudy)

And to keep skin beautiful from the inside out...,

I take these antioxidant/anti-inflammatory supplements:  tumeric, grapeseed extract, ginger, resveratol, vitaminc e, vitamin a, and vitamin c daily.  Astaxathin is also a powerful antioxidant supplement worth checking out.  Strawberries have natural salicylic acid in them (to help keep skin clear), and foods like tomatoes and watermelon contain lycopene which can improve your skin's overall tone and glow as well.

Healthy fats like those found in olive oil and avocados are also important for skin health.

( I personally avoid fish oils and omega capsules as they caused me serious breakouts!  But everyone's skin is different.)

Incorporating more fresh fruits and veggies, and cutting out/back on dairy, sugars and (unhealthy) fatty foods definitely can impact your skin and its appearance.

( Dairy, sugars and meat processed with steroids/hormones affect your hormones, which affect your skin.)

Try to eat as healthy and organic as possible.

Drink 5-6 glasses of water daily, along with green tea.  Nix the soda, artificial sugars, and sugary juices.

No makeup till the age of 23?? Fantastic, good you!

in this rare kind of situation i would say just wash your skin with your favorite cleanser, and apply a moisturizer before your makeup.(i personally dont use any spf as i have a hard time making myself okay with putting this highly chemical substance on my skin.)

This way trap all the goodness your moistsurizer is bringing to the table(hopefully all natural) and block the various baddies makeup, and other external factors try to barrage you with on the daily =)
