Hi, want to know what actually causes pores become big and ways how to minimise & tighten pores?

Thanks.

Pores are gateway for sebum (skin's natural oil) to come out. But when there's imbalance in skin with excess amount of sebum, dead skin cells, and other external impurities that clog (block) pores, they become visibly larger to increase the size of that "open door" for sebum to leak out.

So cleansing and exfoliating should be your daily priority to keep away dead skin cells and other impurities. It's also good to "deep cleanse" once a week to keep your pores clean.

To minimize, I always follow up with pore-tightening pack that has cooling effect after my once-a-week deep cleansing face pack or exfoliation to tighten pores to prevent future clog.

Also, I always wash off with cold water during daily cleansing. Basically, heat opens up the pores and cold closes.

It is also very important to keep your skin hydrated, because excess sebum can be caused by imbalance in your skin- when your skin is dehydrated, more sebum can leak out to make up for that moisture imbalance.

Causes of Large Pores in the Skin

Hereditary Factors

According to the skin experts hereditary factor is one major thing that causes pores. Your genes are the most determining factor in the size of your pore. If one or both parents have got large pores, it is possible for you to experience the same condition. Genetics will actually determine the color of your skin, the type of the skin and even the size of pores in your skin and the rate in which they become larger. The hereditary factors that cause large pores are unavoidable since they are inherited. However taking some necessary steps such as keeping pores clean and reducing the exposure of your skin into other pore enlarging causes can reduce the expansion of pores.

Exposure to Sun

Exposing yourself excessively into the sun can contribute greatly to enlarged pores. Through UV exposure, the DNA in our cells will get damaged. Years of sun exposure may make your pores appear larger. The damage of the sun can thicken the skin, which leads into bigger pores. A prolonged exposure to the sun over time saps collagen, elastin fibers of the skin and water from the skin causing the tissues beneath the skin to shrink and then pulls at the edges of the pores. It also leads to pigmentation, texture changes, and changes of blood vessels, skin cancer and increased number of moles in the body. This will cause them to sag and look larger. They also lead to premature aging which also cause the same effects on the pores at an accelerated rate.

Poor Skin Hygiene

Poor skin hygiene can also play a great role in enlarged pores. Improper skin care may exaggerate skin condition. If your skin is not well washed and you go unwashed for an extended period of time, sebum, dead skin cells and dirt may build up on your skin tissues. According to Dermatologists, these substances may build up around the edges of skin pores, making the pores appear larger than they actually are. It is important to keep your skin clean as possible and ensure you use natural, gentle cleanser which can clean without stripping away the skins natural oils. Ensure that you exfoliate gently about twice a week to deep clean the enlarged pores and add pore-refining cream into the skin care regimen.

Pollution

Air pollution is a problematic for the skin for many reasons. Dust can make your pore enlarge and it can also increase bacteria on the skin, both of which lead to spots and acne. The invisible chemical substances in the air can interfere with the skin’s natural protection system, reducing down natural skin’s oils which normally trap the moisture in the skin and keep the skin supple. Research show that pollution can cause reactions in your skin which inhibit the way it builds and repairs itself. It is therefore important to cleanse thoroughly your skin every day to keep away dirt and grime.

Bad Eating Habits

Eating foods that are poor in nutrients such as weight reduction diets, malnutrition, hair and nail loss and increased susceptibility into infections can encourage pores enlargement. Bad diets also can make increase bacteria in your skin surface making the pores look enlarged. It is therefore important to conversely eat healthy nutritious foods which can improve and maintain healthy skin.

Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking is another factor that enlarges the pores of the skin. Smoking is an element that facilitates the secretion of sebum which makes the skin look bigger than usual. Nicotine constricts small blood vessels and also decreases the flow of oxygen in the body and nutrients into the epidermis. Smoking is actually dangerous in the body because it causes pore enlargement and wrinkles, especially around your mouth. It also increases time taken by the skin to recover from the wounds and stains the skin. Heavy drinking is also a constant dilation of tiny blood vessels in the skin. This can lead into the permanent network of reddish capillaries which appears mostly across the nose and cheeks.

Pores can become enlarged for a number of different reasons (the lovely posters above me did a great job so I won't try and repeat everything they said). One common reason they become enlarged is because they get clogged, by things like dead skin cells, dirt, etc. Make sure you're really cleansing your skin! One product I absolutely love for this is a topical BHA product (I use Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid but you can use whatever you like). It helps exfoliate the skin gently, so it'll make your skin smooth, remove any dead skin cells or dirt leftover after cleansing, and over time will shrink your pores back to normal if they've been enlarged. Genetically speaking, you're born with the pore size you have, and nothing can shrink it further, but if they've been enlarged by blackheads or something like that, then you can shrink them to their default size.

I have larger pores on my face due to too many sunburns when I was younger.  I've tried Proactive with no success.  So far what is working for me is an amazing product called Nerium.  I now sell this after seeing my own results, you can check out my website for more info (link removed)

I have noticed that when I use a facial brush my pores look smaller.  I try to do this and my face has really improved. If I am not too tired, I do it every night.
