Hey Ya'll,

Lately I have been back on a makeup kick. I am embarrassed to say I've probably spent almost $1000.00! YIKES!

Anyway, I started out looking for a nice super long lasting, fullest coverage possible foundation. I heard a lot of good things about Rimmel's Long Lasting - 25 hour foundation and primer. I bought both of them.. and had been using both for a few days. I first noticed that my skin felt itchy but I didn't put it all together that it was the foundation. Then I accidentally was shaving some peach fuzz hair on my face and gave myself razor burn on my chin. Yuck!

So then today, I was uncomfortable all day. My skin felt itchy, sensitive, and kind of swollen but it looked really red and gross so I felt like I had to cover it up. I put on Dior star and went out to lunch and to the mall. I stopped at Sephora, dropped a bomb of money and came home wanting to try it. Soo... I washed my face with the new Tatcha oil cleanser.. and then put on the new Nars foundation - All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation.

OMG, when I went to take all of this off my face looked HORRIBLE... and felt even worse. I'm not kidding I felt like I just got stung by like 50 bees in the face. It's itchy, red, hot, hurting, and just is so angry at everything!

I don't want to go to work tomorrow with nothing on my face because I'll look terrible. But I don't know what to do... makeup wise. I'm a doctor so I know what to do for the rash, but as for the makeup side of it... what can I use that won't make things worse?

Hi!

So sorry to hear this happened to you. I've got itchy from foundations before and it usually goes away as soon as I take the foundation off. Yours sounds way worse.  :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20">  Do you have an old foundation you were using prior to the Rimmel and the new Nars foundation? If you have a foundation you wore before using the Rimmel, I would try that tomorrow when going to work. Also if you have powder that hasn't given you problems, that would be a good way to cover up too with some concealer. Hopefully your skin will get better by tomorrow. I wonder if the Tatcha Oil cleanser or the NARS foundation was irritating too and just added to the sensitivity brought on by the Rimmel foundation.

Ouch!
Honestly? The best thing would be nothing except, say eyeliner and lipstick until it heals and your immune system stops pumping out the histamines. Putting more new stuff on there when you're already primed to react is likely just going to cause more redness in the short term and possibly even more sensitivities in the long run. If you must use something, and there is a formula you haven't reacted to in the past, a bit of green corrective powder lightly dusted to counter the redness would be the best from a makeup/corrective solution, POV, I suppose.
Even though this is drugstore, not high-end, I have so much love for this stuff as a correcting palette that doesn't make me breakout:

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Powder

Thank you ladies, both for your reply. So I took some medicine for my face, once last night and then again in the morning (antihistamine). I also iced my face and then put on a steroid cream and in select spots an anti-itch lotion. I know it seems like a lot but it worked wonders. I woke up with a much calmer face. It was red for sure, but overall felt much better.

I ended up wearing Estee Lauder - double wear. It actually felt nice on my skin.. believe it or not. I love it.. I'm really not sure why I try and venture away from it.. and get lured in by other foundations. Honestly for me its the longest lasting, perfect finish.. best color and has awesome coverage.

I still don't know what happened to my face. I feel kind of bad.. that I went out and spent over $500.00 on makeup and I can't even use the majority of it.

How do you feel about returning makeup to Sephora?

What about organic/natural makeup? Does it work? Any favorite brands? Cutting down on chemicals of course limits the risk of a systemic or localized facial reaction, but how does the makeup hold up?

I loved that Physicians Formula powder, I've never seen something like that but I really like the idea of it. I may have to go to the store tonight. Where is Physicians Formula sold ?

Glad to hear your face feels better. I've tried natural makeup and go back and forth. For a while I used Jane Iredale pressed foundation and really liked the coverage and performance. I'm like you though, can't stick to just one foundation so I moved on to others. I buy too many foundations. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20"> Some of my friends really like Bareminerals but I've never tried it personally.  I've returned some skin care products before because of reaction but not makeup. I think it would be fine to return though. Sephora is usually generous with their returns. I've seen Physicians Formula at Ulta and Target.

I wouldn't feel bad at all about returning the makeup. It doesn't work for you, so don't keep it.

I felt really bad the first time I returned a foundation (unused, I found something else I'd been looking for later the same day). The people at the register won't even care, I'm sure lots of people do it anyway.

Do you have a good skincare routine? You definitely want to make sure your face is free of whatever irritated it and thoroughly clean.

I am going to go return quite a few things this weekend. I bought tatcha's cleansing oil and rice powder buffer and I've been kind of afraid to try it again since my skin went nuts. I may try it again before I return it.. but honestly I've been using a sample of Purity by philosophy and really like it. I went back to my double wear and don't think the nars foundation is a good match for me. I'll probably try it all one product at a time before I return it.

I did get a small sample of the Tatcha stuff before and tried it and everything was great. I really liked it. Perhaps what happened to my skin was caused by the Rimmel. My face is totally clear now. Who knows! All that matters is it's feeling better.

So glad to hear that you are feeling better! I have to be very careful of not to change too many things too quickly or my skin will react and then it's hard to know what product caused it. Sometimes I get so excited to try multiple new things and forget to take it easy and I get breakouts or irritation right away.

@FundattheCircus

I'm on the same boat I have super acne prone and sensitive skin. I never ever buy drug store brands due to massive allergic reactions from a bunch of them when I was a teen. I'm too scarred to try it anymore. Also when I go to Sephora or Macys I ask them to use the foundation on me. I then wear it for roughly 10-15 hours on my face before deciding whether or not to buy it. This was when I was first looking for a foundation which my skin could tolerate and it saved me from so many bad purchases because I will usually have a reaction or break out in that time period. I only use two foundations. The Elizabeth Arden mineral powder ( which I have used for like 6 years straight, never had an issue with) and as of about 2 years ago (estee lauder double wear)

I'm honestly so traumatized from reactions to so many foundations (especially drug store brands) that I have been using only those two foundations for years. I am super hesitant to try new foundations even if they are free samples or from other high end brands. The reason I ended up with the estee lauder was that they had a promotion at Macys and I wanted the gift set. I also needed a water proof foundation because the  elizabeth arden powders runs everywhere with my sweat in the summer and its really gross. I'm just super happy I have a liquid and powder foundation I can use. I have been doing a lot of research in korean products since I got swept up in the craze. I am researching korean BB and CC creams to see if maybe they are more suited for sensitive skin than American products are. Especially since I'm asian and my skin tone is quite difficult to match from American brands.

I'll let you know how it goes if I decide to try it. Let me know if you tried any Korean foundations and if they worked for you. It sounds like we have a similar skin type.

I'm the same way with drugstore foundations. I've tried a few but they just don't go well with my skin. It's too sensitive. I've had good luck with Dr. Jart BB creams. They don't irritate my skin. Dior is the best BB cream I've used so far though. It covers like a foundation. It's the first BB cream I've used up and just bought a new tube. Recently I also tried Skin79 Super+ BB cream from Memebox and it didn't irritate my skin either. I'm looking forward to trying out more Korean skin care BB creams after my skin was ok with this Skin79 one.

After hearing that I am so much more incline to try Korean BB creams. I have heard that American versions of BB creams are not comparable to their Korean counterpart. I have no idea since I never used one, but my notion of a BB cream is something akin to tinted moisturizer which gives light to medium coverage. Good for summer usage, if it is water proof. It goes up to 100 degrees here and I sweat all my makeup off in the summer except for the estee lauder wear. But the double wear just feels so thick and heavy in the summer.
