As I'm on the hunt for several new subs, I've been tracking various issues off and on with different companies.  Since there is so much negavity and some positivity, I was hoping to recognize subs in one spot that are as promised, some that have gone off the rails and more importantly, give a bit of a nod to sub companies who have improved their offerings/services.  There are so many subs that aren't even in existence since I came here, let alone how many new ones there are!  Ideally, I'm asking those who've received 6 or more monthly boxes from the service or 3 or more quarterly boxes, to get a feel for some companies that have lasted beyond the startup process, while giving a sort of snapshot in time, on the best subs out there!

  • Which subs, in your opinion, have gotten worse since you started subbing?
  • Which subs in your opinion have stayed consistent since you've started subbing?
  • Which subs, in your opinion, have gotten better over time, since you started subbing?

The subs that got worse for me were Wantable and FabFitFun.  Wantable had high end brands, advertised them, then after a few boxes, it got terrible on their redesign at the start of the year.  Both suffered from the same problem in grossly inflating the "retail value" of items, FFF was the worst and my last box with them, the value was less than the cost of the box.  (This is a sticking point across all full-size subs with me, I go out of my way to search the retail prices, so I know the real value, I start to have problems when the retail price found online is more than 15% off the stated price.)

IMO, consistent subs are Ipsy and Birchbox.  I'm a 1yr+ sub to both.  While Birchbox has issues with the full size products being on sale, I always have good finds in their samples, so I can order them elsewhere so it works as it intends - exposing me to new products.  Ipsy has always given consistent value, and though a rare few boxes are hit and miss, since we are personal people, that will always happen and the items are good quality for swapping.  My kids love "earning" the bags, I have so many, they are a little useless.  Birchbox man comes with these amazing, hard cardboard boxes with drawers that I implemented for makeup storage, which women's did.

Subs that have gotten better for me are Wal-Mart (surprising, I know).  Each box has a little bit more and more in it, by way of extra samples, and often I get full sized products.  I've never had a thing broken, loose or leaking either.  Barkbox is another.  I posted here separately on their amazing customer service, but before that, the boxes were getting better and better with the items and curation.  They were exactly appropriate for the size of my dog I put in my profile.  Everything lasted so, so long.  When my doggie had to be put down, they refunded the entire balance on my annual sub, no questions asked, no bill to provide, nothing.  While I haven't had the heart to get another pup yet, I have referred them to my neighbors who drool (both the doggies and the humans!) over how great the products are and from what they've shown me, they just get better!

This is a great topic! Thanks for posting!

Here are the boxes that have been consistent for me:

Birchbox, Kloverbox, Petit Vour, Box of Style by Zoe Report, Jouer

Boxes that have improved:

Julep, Allure, Beauteque

Boxes that are or have been hit and miss for me:

Glossybox, Popsugar Must Have, Fab Fit Fun, New Beauty Test Tube, Le Metier (new subscriber to to Le Metier and have only received a few boxes this year)

Great topic!

Consistent boxes:

PopSugar - I really feel like I know what to expect and will always enjoy it.

Improved:

Kloverbox - not that the box was ever bad, it just keeps getting better. Despite shipping issues (which drive me crazy), I am willing to overlook it bc the box improves each month.

Turn for the worse:

Little Lace Box - each month the products were less relevant to my lifestyle. I finally cancelled - knowing that I would never be able to go back due to the price increase.

Birch box - I'm just over it. Cancelled months ago and have not looked back!!

Oh, that reminds me Reija, I did forget Julep.  I had their polish only box and the quality of polish is stellar.  I'd say it stayed consistent, but it was great to begin with.  Though they were heavy on purples, I found out I can customize my box in a window to get what I want, which is awesome!

I just switched over to polish +1 beauty, so I'm excited to see how that goes.  I've gotten a few random samples in the past, and one came with a polish specials box and their hand cream was awesome!

Love this!!

Consistent:

Birchbox

Ipsy

FabFitFun (I still love them)

PopSugar Must Have

3B Box

Walmart

Improved:

Boxycharm

Allure Sample Society

Lacking:

Beautyfix

Wantable

Mishibox

Target (I haven't liked the past few boxes)

Glossybox

i don't know if it is consistency. i strart getting the same things in different boxes i get bored and want to try something new. Birchbox was okay but wanted fuller sizes. I have never seen anything in a Popsugar Box that I must have most of it is junk to me and over priced.  I did boxy charm and they were a good value but strarted repeating items. i did wantable for a bit but their value has decreased for me for the money. so now just down to beauteque.

Great idea!

  • Which subs, in your opinion, have gotten worse since you started subbing?
I would say FabFitFun for the reasons you listed, and Starbox as I hate the new system now, and I can not seem to cancel even when emailing them several times!

  • Which subs in your opinion have stayed consistent since you've started subbing?
Birchbox, Ipsy, and for the most part PopSugar MustHave

  • Which subs, in your opinion, have gotten better over time, since you started subbing?
Boxycharm (oh my gosh have they improved!), Glossybox, and Allure (now that Allure owns them).

Consistent: Julep and Rachel Zoe.

Better: I'm too new to the sub box game to answer this.

Worse: Little Lace Box... Ugh is my subscription over yet?!

If I could only sub to one box it would be Rachel Zoe. The box is so amazing I'm terrified daily it will pull a Nina Garcia.

Consistent:

Birchbox

3b

Fluctuates:

Ipsy- I have rage quit several times. First there is a huge variance in bag values. A dozen tweens get the highly coveted Tarte or Too Faced item, while everyone else is getting Jcat or Be a Bombshell stuff. They also used to offer nothing under 1,000 points and it was all crap like glitter tattoos. The actual bags tend to look like something from the value bins at Target. The point system has gotten better. They now offer items at 100, 250 and 500 points. Although I still never get the high end sample item I have gotten some really great bags.

Decline:

Target-Personally I don't want a box of drug store brands i.e Dove, Olay or Covergirl.

Better: GlobeIn – I don't subscribe, but the boxes have been catching my eye for the past few months.

Consistent: Popsugar. It's formulaic but it works.

Worse: Nina Garcia, LLB. Started the year with high hopes, but canceled both.

Consistent:
PopSugar - I like that the value is always there and their boxes are fun but I found myself swapping more than keeping. This is now one that I only subscribe to if I love the spoilers. I never miss out on their LE boxes though!

Rachel Zoe - I've been obsessed since her first box and will be a forever subscriber. I hope she will continue to make amazing boxes. Favorite sub right now.

Improved:

Burke Box - I remember getting that first box and being so disappointed about it. I didn't think they could improve but they have become one of my favorites. Bummer about their subscription ending. Hoping their new launch is just as awesome.

Globein - I thought they were slowly declining because of all the food items they kept sending but these past few boxes have become my favorite. I love how they curate to their themes so well and their CS is top notch!

Worse:

Little Lace Box - This box is one that I am no longer excited to receive. Each box keeps getting worse. I'm already planning to cancel after December if it doesn't excite me.

Glossybox -  They were one of the first boxes I subbed to and I thought their products were decent but they truly have the worse CS ever. I never loved this sub, they ship late and don't respond to emails. I also think the quality has gone downhill as well, I would never subscribe again.

FabFitFun - I don't think this box is necessarily bad, I just think it's boring. I don't like that they send so many gift cards to fill in the value and it feels like they just throw whatever they can get into the box. Nothing ever fits their theme of season.

Consistent: Ipsy, Popsugar (I always find one or two items I really really love and one or two items I really really don't like), Birchbox (The customer service is hard to deal with at times but the boxes are usually the same), Kloverbox, Beauty DNA (I find myself in either a GREAT month or a BLEH month. It is never a period of months that I love it)

Worse: Beautyfix, Target, Fabfitfun, Nina Garcia ( I started with Nina on her 1st box. The boxes have been on a huge decline since the 1st box), Wantable (I had the Accessories and Makeup for over a year and I am so frustrated with box. I have been skipping months recently), Adore Me ( Several months now and I have not enjoyed any new styles), Scent Truck (I have tried to cancel but the owner keeps pulling me back), Ouiplease (Need I say more?), French Box (No comment needed)

Better: Boxy Charm, Julep, Scentbird ( I love the new color cases and fragrances), Bianca Jade (I have really loved her boxes), Rachel Zoe (I fall in love over and over again!)

Consistent:

Ipsy - Love the bags and they usually send at least two things I actually want and like.

Mindful - It's a niche market, but I am that niche.  It reinforces my practice every month.

Improved:

Believe it or not, Beauty Box 5 is most improved for me, for a while I thought I would cancel after my year was up, but then they started sending me fun things that I really liked, so they are here to stay.

Worse:

Birchbox.  I finally cancelled, I just wasn't getting anything that interested me.  I have found two products I love with them, but that was early on.

Worst:

French Box.  I loved the first couple of boxes, now I just dread the disappointment.  I keep hoping the next box will be better but it never is.  I haven't asked for a refund because I keep hoping.  I think that might be the definition of insanity.

I was actually thinking about this recently, so I was happy to stumble upon this thread.  I've subscribed to many boxes on and off since the end of 2013.  Here are my thoughts:

Consistent:

Popsugar

Rachel Zoe (although there have only been a few boxes so far, so I'm hoping they keep up the great work!)

Your Bijoux Box (I have canceled and resubscribed a few times, but just because I have so much jewelry.  I think the quality of their items has been consistently good)

Bespoke Post

Worse:

Taste Guru

Socialbliss

Wantable (I had canceled a while ago because the value just wasn't there for me, but I thought the recent price increase/box restructuring was a bad sign)

Little Lace Box (I used to love this box, and I'm still subscribed at the $40 rate, but I'm going to cancel if the next box isn't better than the last couple were. Also, like Wantable, the price increase seemed like a bad sign.)

Quarterly Nina Garcia

Birchbox (I had to cancel after about a year.  I would actually get angry at the absurdly small sample sizes I would receive.  Even at only $10, it wasn't worth it to me)

Improved:  None that I can think of

I don't know where to categorize Julep, since their nail polish is consistent, but I just don't like the formula, and I am allergic to a lot of their skin care and makeup items that I've received.  There are also other boxes that I haven't gotten enough of to see any trends (Glossybox, Hazel Lane).

It does seem to me that many boxes end up going downhill after a while, so I really hope the ones in my "consistent" category stay that way!
