I am being driven insane by foundations. I have combo skin that is VERY dry except for the T-zone which depending on time of year/hormones can be normal to oily. My cheeks also have a lot of texture and redness and always have.

Despite a strict skin-care regimen I've come up with for my sensitive, dry skin (Mary Kay, Paula's Choice, and Tarte) every time I wear any sort of foundation or CC cream after 10 minutes my skin looks DISGUSTING. It looks extremely dry and powdery, despite the fact I only put a small amount of translucent powder on my T-zone. My concealer looks cakey and creased (I'm only 21, I really don't have wrinkles yet!) It honestly ages me by 20 years and is so embarassing!

I always use a moisturizer before applying any makeup as well as a hydrating primer. I apply all foundation and concealer with a damp beauty blender in a stippling motion. At the end I set everything with urban decay chill makeup setting spray.

At this point I've just about lost hope. Off the top of my head, I've Tarte, Urban Decay, Clinique,It Cosmetics CC cream, and Mary Kay. Both the foundation and the CC cream. Mary Kay's CC cream is definitely the best but still isn't totally there and doesn't have enough coverage for when I want to go full-glitz. I love to do bold eyes and it just looks weird and unfinished with my freckles and redness showing through full force. So, anyone out there. I am despise for a med-full coverage foundation for extremely dry skin that won't make me look chalky or wrinkly. I also really hate matte finishes. Natural or dewy is ideal.

Finding the right foundation/primer combo can be really frustrating. I've found that sometimes I prefer the end result without a primer and sometimes with a primer depending on the foundations and the primers. I've tried too many to count. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20"> Sounds like you are using a hydrating primer which is good because I was thinking the reason for cakeyness could be your skin being too dry. Sometimes primers can have the opposite affect and be too drying. Have you tried the foundations/cc creams without the primer just over your moisturizer? Do you use an exfoliator? Exfoliating regularly really helps foundation to go on better. I like Dr. Jart products for bb/cc creams because they have fuller coverage and seem to perform really well with evening out my skin. The shades are a bit harder to figure out but many times the shade ends up being ok on the skin even though it looks way off in the tube. I prefer Korean skin care brands anyhow. They seem to work really well. Erborian is another good brand. Estee Lauder is a great brand too and the tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier is great when combined with their primer.  Clinique has a moisturizing CC cream. Have you tried that one? I wish there was a clear answer to your situations. It's really a trial and error to find the right products for your skin. Also your skin changes over time so a product that works today might not work in the future. Sounds like you are doing the right steps though.

It is indeed quite a struggle to get hold of the right foundation that suits, both the skin tone and skin type. Once you get it right, it is a huge relief for everyday makeup routine. However, if foundation is still being a problem, you could give BB and CC Creams a try. BB and CC Creams are tinted moisturisers, that leaves with 2 benefits; skin care and makeup base. Several top skin care brands have introduced bb and cc creams that come with moisturising benefits, antioxidants, the effects of a primer to offer coverage on skin blemishes, acne marks, etc. All you have to do is find the right pick! The advantage here is, it is not too heavy or drying on the skin (like a foundation), but simultaneously plays a very good natural makeup base for everyday (like a foundation!).

I find my skin is much dryer in the colder months, I'm desperate to feel the sun on my skin! I agree that exfoliating this the answer to all dry skins issues. There is nothing my rejuvenating then a good exfoliation, you must let your skin breathe.

your struggle sounds similar to mine. i used to have a go-to foundation that was always perfect, but they changed the formula and I'm pretty much out of my old bottle (and I'm sure it's expired). It was Revlon's Colorstay liquid foundation for oily/combination skin. So i've been on the prowl for a new go-to foundation. so far, i can't find ANYTHING that works

except....

I received a sample of Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Longwear Foundation Stick and I fell in love. I really feel like this stuff may be me new perfect foundation. But I haven't received my full stick in the mail, so I haven't had the chance to use it all over my face and for more than a few hours. I'm just telling you this to give you a heads up that maybe this foundation can work for you. Maybe see if you can snag a sample somewhere!! I hope you find a solution!

I have combination skin as well, and I seem to be extremely dry on each side of my nose (like where my nose meets the rest of my face) as well as on each side of my chin (I'm talking gross patchy and flaky skin) I apply a hyaluronic acid serum before my primer (which is silicone based) and the serum helps to lock in moisture where I need it (the dry super flaky spots) and then I apply a moisturizing foundation (I use the Elf Cosmetics Moisturizing Foundation Stick in Ivory and Natural) My skin looks flawless for about 10 hours without blotting and flaking. The finish of the foundation is pretty nice and it covers my freckles pretty well. I know that Elf doesn't work for everyone, but it's only $6.00 and it may be worth giving a chance. What kind of moisturizer are you using? And out of curiousity, have you by any chance had the chance to try a light lactic acid peel? I do them on myself as well as a friend of mine who's skin over produces oil. We do one once a week and on her, I use a 30% Lactic Acid which is weak but still has enough potency to do the job. I leave it on her for 60 seconds and she goes 6-7 days without oily skin. Now for the dry skin, the peel actually exfoliates the dead skin which reveals healthy and fresh vibrant skin. You'd still need to moisturize. Both the peel and the hyaluronic acid as a duo will help lighten freckles, reduce the appearance of scars, lighten any hyperpigmentation of the skin as well as reduce and prevent wrinkles. If a chemical peel sounds scary, you could find a facial cleanser and toner that have a small percent in them to use daily which may keep the shine at bay and possibly a good moisturizer or even a sleeping pack (it's the Korean and Japanese version of a night cream that traps moisture and there's a super good one that is less than $5.00 online I could recommend) may help do the trick.

You said you use Paula's Choice skin care.  Have you tried contacted their customer service?  They could probably make some suggestions.  They might even send you some samples.
