Hello all,

It seems that no matter what I try, my skin always has dry patches especially noticeable on my cheeks when I apply makeup. I exfoliate twice a week, and I've tried switching products. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Products I use for skin care:

Clinique 3 step for dry skin with acne solutions.

(This includes a moisturizer)

Makeup application:

I prime my skin with Benefits Porefessional.

I apply dots of Revlon Color Stay (110) in normal/dry and blend that out with a real Techniques sponge (3 in 1)

I skip concealer usually because that makes me even drier.

I then go over my foundation with Mac Mineralize Skinfinish (light plus) which is where my skin starts looking very dry.

I contour with Mac's matte bronze

Eyebrows: Anastasia Beverly Hills

Eyes: prime with Mac Soft Ochre and any shadow (using Naked 3 palette right now)

I can't seem to find the problem and I hate the look of my skin. I have tried taking photos by my camera isn't showing it well enough. Any solutions or advice to help the look of my dry, patchy skin?

Hi! Welcome to MUT! Getting dry patches is so frustrating and most common problem with foundations. It's many times just a trial and error to find the right combo. Have you tried with a different primer or with no primer at all? Sometimes the results can be better with no primer and just using a setting spray at the end instead. I tried Benefits Porefessional primer and liked it at first but then it seemed to make my foundation look worse. I have a combo skin but my skin looked really dry when I used it.

I've actually just started using the primer. Before the primer the dry patches were much worse. They still occur with the primer but in smaller areas. I just feel lost, I so badly want a flawless look!

Have you tried different moisturizers? You might need a heavier moisturizer before applying the foundation. Also have you tried applying the foundation with a brush? The end results are very different with foundations when applied with a brush vs a sponge vs fingers. It could also be the foundation itself that is not agreeing with your skin. I've tried countless of foundations/primer/moisturizer combos over the years and it's really tricky to find the combo that works for your skin. Most of the time I find that the culprit is the foundation and I try a different one or the primer is the problem.

Using a brush makes my skin look a lot worse. I've tried a few different foundations, now three different moisturizers and nothing is working. Like I said before I used a primer the skin was a lot worse. I've managed to get a picture of it this morning.

Based on your picture, I would say that maybe a moisturizer or the primer you are using is causing the foundation to go on like this. I've noticed that this happens to me if I use a serum or primer with silicone in it. It causes the foundation not to go on smoothly. After the Clinique 3-step, can you use another primer that is silicone free to see if that makes a difference? You said you had tried to apply it without the Benefit primer and still the same thing happened? If that's the case, the moisturizer or other skin care product you are using could be the cause. Clinique has a primer that is silicone free. Maybe see if you can get a sample of it to try to see if it makes a difference.

In order to prevent dry skin patches you can try some good facial soap and cleansers but if your skin feels tight and dry then you should stick the mild and fragrance-free cleanser and avoid harsh anti-bacterial soaps that may damage your skin a lot more.

Dry your skin properly after using any of the cleansing product.

While going to take shower, use warm water instead of hot or cold.

Consult a skin care expert and take him a good moisturizing cream recommendation
