According to your skin tone.

Warm skin tone= red lipstick with warm undertones /orangy red

Cool skin tone= red lipstick with blue undertones. Ex. Burgundy.

But Im not sure. Thats how I think it should be. Not sure..

@@grace2016 - Wearing a lipstick color that compliments your skin tone is key. If you have neutral undertones, then you can pretty much wear any color that you're comfortable with, but be aware that anything with yellow undertones is going to make your teeth look yellow. So, unless you have very white teeth, those colors are tough to pull off. Anything with a blue undertone, likes reds or pinks that specify a blue or cool undertone, as @@makeupilove mentioned above, will make your teeth look more white, even if they aren't the whitest.

If you have cool undertones, then a yellow or warm undertoned lipstick will look orangey on you and won't be flattering. So, you want to stay with cool toned colors, mid toned colors or neutral. Most websites will state in the color description what tones the color has, or you can just eye it in person. Try a cool toned nude, a blue toned pink or red, or a mauve shade.

If you have warm undertones, you can wear warm toned colors, like corals, orangey reds, warm pinks and berry shades. They will look more warm toned in person. A cool toned lip shade on someone with warmer undertones can sometimes make you look washed out. As far as lip liner goes, if you're going for a seamless look, meaning all one color, go to a place where you can test out the colors on the back of your hand, and try to find the closest match between your lipstick and the liner.

You can also go to a website like Colourpop.com, where they sell amazing lipsticks (for only $5/ea!!) and they all have matching lip liners that were specifically made for those lipsticks. You can't go wrong! Plus, all the shade descriptions are very helpful. Most tell you if they are warm/cool/mid toned and it makes it really easy to pick a shade that will compliment your skin tone. Some high end lines, like Tarte, also have lipsticks with matching lip liners made specifically for them, like their Tarte Matte Lip Paints and liners.

At the end of the day, it's all about what you feel comfortable in. If you want to wear a pinkey nude lip, go for it. If you want to wear neon purple, rock it girl. There are no real "rules" to makeup. It's about self expression. These tips are merely guidelines. Have fun with it!! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Yeah, I agree with the skin tone guidelines, however your last paragraph sums it up perfectly...

In film I go with what the character would wear (which is based on the make-up design and lighting) and not so much on skin tone.

For street wear (which this thread is talking about) I go with what the person feels comfortable with wearing at that moment.

For me as a Professional MuA, I never use the skin tone guidelines when choosing a lip colour.  I always go with how the person is feeling, for example; powerful, happy, comfortable, sad, etc.

It is confusing!  There is so much contradictory information out there.  I agree that visiting a makeup counter may be the best way to figure it out.

I am by no means an expert, but it sounds to me as though you may have a neutral undertone.  That is what I have, and I had a heck of a time figuring it out!

Don't hesitate to try whatever colors you like no matter what - through trial and error, you can find some flattering colors that really surprise you.  Inexpensive lipsticks are great for that, but you can also try them on (sterilized) at a makeup store.

I pick a color that goes with my outfit. For a black dress I go with dark rose, for a colorful outfit I choose something bright, for something casual I pick a subtle peach. The only thing I don't like is shimmery lipstick. Shimmer is only appropriate for clubs, costumes, and young girls. Otherwise it looks ridiculous.

Make-up is a personal choice for sure.

When Senior MuA's from agencies decide the looks and trends for the upcoming seasons, we typically use a "fashion trend bible" in conjunction with the "old-school make-up colour textbook 101" as our basic guide and we proceed from there in collaboration with Senior Stylists and we develop looks with what Fashion Designers have on paper. Having said all that...

Your nail colour is supposed to accessorize your outfit, not your lip colour.

Fashion is like a jumbled jig-saw puzzle, I am just arranging the pieces to make it easier to place, but it's up to the individual to make the pieces fit.

Again it's all guidelines and like I said above, make-up is a personal choice.

I really feel like it's in the way you carry yourself. If you're 40, and you take care of your skin and your lips, and you want to rock a metallic lip, or a frosted lip, or a shimmery lip, ROCK IT. If you show that you are confident in what you wear, and you feel beautiful, then more power to you. If YOU believe in you, then everyone else will too. Hell, they're probably wishing they could pull it off as well as you do!

You can do anything you want in this world, as long as you be yourself and love yourself. Make your own rules! That's why it's called self-expression!! Stay gorgeous and confident ladies! xoxo

Haha its funny because here in greece the frosties wear only mature ladies.

You would rarely see a middle aged lady 30/40 wearing a frosted lipstick

Or a young girl 15/20.

But i thing these kind of lipsticks are more interesting than the flat mattes.i mean with no shimmer at all.no glow.no glitter :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Obvioualy because there are frosted with matte finish.

@@makeupilove to find your undertone, I would definitely suggest going into Sephora, if you have one near you, or another beauty store where there are knowledgeable beauty specialists. When I meet a client, I can tell immediately what their undertone is, simply from experience. I can also usually match their foundation color with any brand, just by looking at their skin. It comes with the territory of our career field. They could also try a few foundations on you, with cool undertones, warm and neutral, and it will be quickly obvious which undertone you are, based on if the warm undertone foundation looks orange on you, or the cool tone one looks ashy on you, for example. Either way, the beauty specialist should be able to tell you one way or the other.

Based on your comment above though, I would venture a guess that you may have neutral undertones, just like me, which will mean that you can wear a lot of different colors well. To be sure though, definitely get with a beauty specialist to help. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Well im gonna try but we dont have experts here. They are very rare at sephora etc.

But thanks. I will find out eventually.

Or if you want to help me by sending you some different lighting pictures with no filter ofc.

Tell me if you want sth like this ...

Another tip I read somewhere. If you look good in mostly silver jewelry, you are cool tone. If you look best in gold, you are warm tone. If you can rock both, congrats you are neutral and can wear almost anything. You can also peek in your closet, you tend to gravitate towards colors in one color family vs the other. You mentioned liking red and green and you prefer gold jewelry. That suggests you are warm toned. Try some warm lipsticks out. Tomato-y reds or orangey corals. See if you like them. Makeup washes off right?

Pink is my favorite color and I get compliments on various shades of it.

I think it suits my personality which makes it suit me in general.

During the day I wear lighter pink (your classic "baby" pink) and at night I like to wear brighter, hot pink. I use clear gloss over all my lipstick, especially the brighter shades because it tones them down.

Hey, ladies!

I found this really great website that helps you to determine which colors look best on you. I have found it to be very accurate. Once I took their online quiz and got my color swatch, I matched lip colors with the pinks and reds in my personal color palette. Here is the link for anyone that is interested (and don't worry it is not an affiliate link or anything) - http://www.whataremycolors.com/

I hope this helps! :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
