As soon as I apply liquid foundation it looks chalky, dry/powdery, cakey no matter what I do! I've watched tutorials, read blogs etc. but nothing seems to work! Hopefully you guys can help me out

Hi! Welcome to MUT @@Rb3! Finding the right match with a moisturizer/primer and the foundation is pretty difficult task. Do you use exfoliators? Exfoliating 1-2 times a week is important and helps the moisturizer work better and the foundation to work better. Do you use a toner? Toner helps to balance the PH of the skin. Also what cleanser do you use? The cleanser can be too trying to your skin. Also the moisturizer might be not moisturizing enough for you. Does it say "oil free"? I used to use oil free products for years not realizing they were making my combo skin worse. Once I switched to "heavier" moisturizers, my skin started to look and feel much better and the foundation was easier to apply and looked way better and it wasn't as oily anymore.

1) Dew finish would be great for you since you have a drier skin. I personally switch between matte and dewy depending on the day. You can add a drop of skin care oil in your moisturizer and that would help moisturize more.

2) Silicone based and water based moisturizer/primer/foundations don't mix so if the primer is silicone based then the foundation needs to be too.

3 & 4) You could try a setting spray. NYX is good brand they have a dewy finish and matte finish setting spray.

It could just be that the moisturizer you are using is not compatible with the foundations you are using. No7 and Boots are great brands.

I'd say that you have wrong skin routine.. What moisturizer do you use? Do you exfoliate regularly?

Thanks for the advice Reija and angela17.

It's hard to find dewy foundations that aren't too glittery- do you know of any?

I stopped using exfoliators as I read that they are too harsh and abrasive for dry skin and can cause it to look more flakey? What do you think?

I wanted to use more natural products so I tried apple cider vinegar as a toner which is supposed to be amazing but didn't continue as my skin was very sensitive to it. Also been using coconut oil as makeup remover/cleanser.

Would you be able to recommend any gentle/natural skincare products?

Coconut oil is great for skin so I would continue using that. There are exfoliators made for dryer skin types that are not as strong as exfoliators for an oily skin for example. PIXI has a great toner called the Glow tonic that is exfoliating at the same time. No7 and Garnier for example have face scrubs for dry skin. I wouldn't use an exfoliator daily though. Only once a week and sometimes even once every 2 weeks. Have you tried BB creams? They are like tinted moisturizers but with skin care benefits and are a great option for quick coverage on the go and an alternative to a foundation. Maybelline has a Fit Me Dewy foundation and also a BB cream.

Those products sound great - will definitely check them out! What moisturizers and cleansers would you recommend for dry skin? Do you know of any good full coverage concealers for blemishes?

First off, for acne, my favorite is Vichy's Normaderm Acne Daily Deep Cleansing Gel. You can get this at Target for $17.99. Don't be freaked out by the price because I literally use it everyday and it lasts me for months.

For moisturizing, if you have dry skin, I would suggest CeraVe PM facial moisturzing (also at Target for $12 to $13) or Neutrogena Hydro Boost ($20).

I also suggest a toner. It will clear out more acne and remove makeup!

Keeping your face clean & clear is great for a better makeup application/appearance.

For foundation, if you are looking at drugstore. Its pretty tricky because mostly what you pay for is what the quality is. The ones I found to be the best was Maybelline Matte and Powerless. Dewy foundations tend to "slide" off throughout the day.

For application, Real Techniques is great, but that stippling brush does not give a great blend (I own it too!) And that may be a big problem to your cakey issue. Try finding a flat top foundation brush. I believe Sonia Kashuk sells one and that is at Target as well. Beauty blenders are great for getting a less-cakey coverage as well.

For concealer, Maybelline's Camouflage concealer is the best!!! I still use it to this day, it doesn't budge and great for covering up anything. I used to work with the Target Beauty program, and a guy had surgery on his face that left heavy bruising around his eye. We sampled it and it was nearly gone! Look into it!

For powder, Defiantly use powder! That will keep your foundation on and stop sliding. L'Oreal Hydra Perfecte Loose Powder is the best! I use it everyday.

For primer/setting spray, NYX has good primers and setting sprays. NYC or Wet n Wild may have good primers. I would say most primers are good. I normally don't see a huge difference in any that I've used. But, they are still good to use especially if you use drugstore foundation.

I used to use drugstore but have found a significant difference in wearing higher quality brands because there is less creasing, cakey-like... but there are still some drugstore brands I still use and are great. I hope this helps. I know its like product over-load! I used to suggest products when I worked at Target, so give them a check! <3
