Basically what I'll do is this: I will shut off the old server's message board . Then we'll do our dump of the database info and copy to the new server(seems easy, but it's a ton of data). Once that is done, I'll change MUT's DNS (domain name server's IP) then activate, or turn on, the boards on the new server while the name propagates down through the web.
The end result is that for most of you users, after I change DNS, will hit the old server for a period of 6-18 hours. If you come to the site and see the boards turned off, you are on the old server and will have to continue to check back often to see if the site is back on. Some will hit the new server sooner than others and that's out of our control.
If you come and see the site online, you will be ready to post away!

question: couldn't you just give out the new IP if anyone wanted it? (it is static) I mean before DNS is propagated? iust wondering..
