Why I hate the State of NY and the DMV

So, here in this grand ol' state you have to have yearly vehicle inspections. No valid inspection, you can't register your car. You used to be able to still register it, but new law went into effect on 09/2007. I've been scrambling all damned week to get this done since my deadline is Thursday at 4pm. My inspection wasn't valid, and it's time to re-register the car. Oh fun!
I took the car to Bridgestone/Firestone, and they were going to do all of the repairs. The car was only throwing two codes (EVAP Shut-Off Valve & Knock Sensor), so they fixed the first one. They went to take care of the knock sensor, and realized the idiot who owned the car before me tampered with the wiring. They had used speaker wire or some mess. So, they didn't want to touch it and preferred I take it to the dealership. (I give them credit for this). Grand total at Bridgestone/Firestone was $785! However, part of the charge was for my lifetime alignment, replacing a lugnut, and cleaning the EGR Valve.
So, I rushed to Infiniti, and they said the car was throwing 3 codes. Bridgestone never cleared the EVAP Valve code, so we knew that was taken care of. But now it was throwing an O2 sensor PLUS that knock sensor. John wanted them to balance the tires, so they balance 3 of the 4 since that damned flat tire from last week won't even make a difference if they balance it. So, my grand total with Infiniti (including my inspection cost) is $875.
I should be able to make it to the DMV today since one here closes at 6pm. If so, then I can register it for $50, and the whole ordeal is over! Complete, kaput, and cost me a whopping grand overall total of $1710!
At least I have two years on my registration, and another year before we have the emissions inspection. I'm so glad this whole thing is basically over! I'll be even happier once I'm home with my car that I haven't had in 2 days without any worries for at least a damned year!
Seriously, this whole thing had me stressed beyond belief and ready to cry at any minute! Ugh! I'm not used to this crap since in Georgia all we have to do is get the car registered yearly! Bastard State of NY - Hell, any state requiring all of this crap! LOL!

Holy crap!! That's a lot of money!!
Guess I should have lent you my code reader? For under $100 you can get one that will read the codes and then let you clear them.. And as long as they don't triger before or during the inspection then you can take your time and find a cheaper place or do it your self.. The standard 3 wire O2 sensor only costs $50 and just screws in and plug in the wire.. Just changed 2 on the Camry and need to change a couple on the Sienna... I'm sure glad I work on my own vehicles!! Leaves more money for makeup!! ![]() |

John didn't want to mess with it since it's all related to the PCM. Apparently Infinitis are really tricky? I dunno! The codes weren't clearing for crap... I'm still waiting on them to call to say the codes set... And it's currently 3:10pm! UGH! The O2 needed to be replaced since it was supposedly rusted. Damned salt!

How old is it? Typically O2 sensors last quite a long time.. 10+ years on the Camry and they slowly degrade.. You notice a drop in the gas mileage.. Unless they just fail.. Which I've had one do..
But I standardized on Toyota's (have 3), same engine., all made in kentucky.. And easy to maintain and repair.. If I can't fix it I don't want it!! Lol. Hell I've never been to the dealer... For a repair.. The only thing that had gone wrong (excluding consumables like breaks and filters) is 2 coils and an O2 sensor over 8 years on the Sienna and 2 O2 sensors, changed the timing belt once.. And some CV boots on the Camry over 12 years.. Nothing on the Solara since I bought it used.. And it will never need any parts as long as my daughter keep getting it smashed into! Lol. It will be destroyed befroe anything breaks!! Damn cars are a racket!!! They give you a rebate and discounts when you buy then rob you blind when you need service!! |

In Australia if the car is over 3 years old it must be inspected for rego yearly, thats been in as long as I can remember. Something to be said for old cars that don't need all that diagnosis stuff and sensors lol It's a pain when you got to throw money at your car.

Karren, it's a 1999. They still have the freakin' car! The codes won't set... Still kicking back as "Incomplete." I swear to crying out loud! Apparently, for some reason, the I series cars have a harder time setting codes than any other Infiniti model. Lucky me, eh?

It's currently about 11:15am on Thursday, the day of my deadline. Still no word from Infiniti. I'm about to call, but regardless I will be picking up my car today. Even if that means waiting to register it later. This is just complete BS anymore!
