The Body Shop is now owned by Loreal who is notorious for their animal testing practices.
From Estee Lauder:
All of our ingredients and formulations are tested in vitro and on human volunteers. We do not test our ingredients or finished products on
animals, nor do we ask others to conduct animal testing on our behalf. The
Estée Lauder Companies has no intention of testing on animals in the future.
BUT, Estee Lauder have not adopted a fixed cut-off date policy, which would essentially ensure that they did not buy any ingredient from suppliers that had been animal tested after a certain date (decided by the company).

On that site, companies (like the Body Shop) who are subsidiaries of companies that do not conform to their standards are marked.
In the end, it all depends on how far you want to take it and how much you believe in your convictions. Also, be warned, companies can say that their products aren't tested on animals when, in actuality, they are. So, you can either be trusting and lenient when dealing with smaller companies or companies that aren't sponsored by coalitions that you stand behind, or you can be entirely strict and cynical to what people say and stick to what you personally trust.
