Makeup Artists

I was wondering how many of you makeup artists out there work a full time job and just do makeup on the side part time? I have one more year of college and I am planning on getting a marketing job to coordinate with my degree and I am also planning on going through a makeup artist training in Summer 2008. I wasn't sure how easy it is to work as a makeup artist part time while working a regular full time job. Do most counters or stores work well with your hours?

Re: Makeup Artists

I work full time as a makeup artist. I would think it would be hard to work both jobs. To me you must focus on one or the other to be successful. Better to be a master of one then a jack-of-all trades.

Re: Makeup Artists

Thats what I thought. I will probably pursue my makeup dreams and attempt that path. I will always have my degree to fall back on too. I just have such a passion for makeup and it would be so amazing to actually pursue that.

I feel the same way! I'm actually graduating tomorrow and tonight I was looking up makeup courses. I love doing makeup and it would be a dream to get to do it everyday. My degree is in education and I feel like that is a safe job.

On the same terms...I just saw that it can costs $10,000 for a cosmetology course.

I decided to not go to cosmetology school for that reason. It costs alot if you are strictly wanting the cosmetic part. I am planning just getting makeup training. Later down the road I may decide to go to cosmetology school if I want to do hair.

Re: Makeup Artists

Do you want to be a makeup artist for commercials and print?

Or tv and film?

For commercials/print, I would highly recommend going to cosmetology school, because they tend to hire people who can do both hair/makeup. And I would do it now, because you really won't have time off to do it later (job bookings are sporadic and you want to be available for everything).

For tv/film, just the makeup course, because there are 2 separate unions for makeup and hair. Also highly recommend doing the special effects courses.

I saved up money when I quit the counter (you really can't do both, retail demands a certain number of hours and is unforgiving at requesting days off at the last minute-jobs tend to book in less than a week. Part-time retail is 30 hours/5 day weeks, usually 12-5.), because I knew that I would be pretty poor for 3 years. Those first 3 years, I learned how to style hair because that would be the most common question that came up (even for independent films), and I couldn't turn work down.

It took me about 5 years to make a steady income that I can depend on. Unlike Agostina, I'm freelance without an agent. I still do hair for print/commercials though.

Given the area you live in, I don't know how many media jobs would be available. I think you would be doing a lot of event makeups. If you want to do more than that, perhaps a move to Chicago (if you want to stay in the midwest) would be better-there are a lot more print/television/film jobs going on there.

Re: Makeup Artists

I actually work full time and am a part time make up artist. It's not that bad because I mostly do brides and well people usually get married on the weekends! So it works out for me. And when people want a trial, evenings are usually the best!
I think that being a makeup artist is a pretty good thing to do part time.

I guess it also depends on what aspect you want to focus on. If you just want to do brides then doing it part time is fine. But if you want to get intothe fashion or movie industry then it probably wont work.

Hope this helps you out!
