An oberservation i made yesterday...

yesterday i was in this one japanse cafe in seattle and i was looking through a japanese fashion magazine.

and i noticed that in all the pictures and products dealing with makeup the looks and colors were very simple. not like any magazine in the US were the people are wearing a lot of makeup in bright obnioux colors. the whole thing seemed very minimilist.

now i was just wondering if anyone knew if this is because of a cultural thing or becuase they value skincare more than acutal makeup (i saw a lot of skincare tips and products insted)?

Re: an oberservation i made yesterday...

it might just be the trend now, because some japanese magazines i own has a lot of wild colors too xD
but they do care a lot about skincare, that's why their skin always look great

Re: an oberservation i made yesterday...

Probably a mixture of both, I'm asian and my parents used to subscribe to some magazines from out of the US, and it seemed very much like that, too. Asia tends to flaunt more "natural beauty" looks instead of heavy makeup, which I think is nice . I guess it's a culture thing too, because my mom always tells me I'm wearing too much makeup when I go out somewhere. :P

I noticed that too, especially at the new school I'm at - since it's predominately Asian folks. They all keep makeup very simple. Simplicity suits their features very well. I'm very curious about Asian skincare since theirs seem to be the best and innovative... and cheap.

Not all Asian skincare is cheap. But they do have drugstore lines like we do.

I think it's a mix of both. Skincare is very important, especially to many Koreans and Japanese people. The goal is to have light, bright, youthful looking skin.

Re: An oberservation i made yesterday...

I've seen heaps of bright colourful looks in the younger magazines, but I haven't looked at any for a while so maybe I'm out of touch?? I love their skincare products, so many crazy exciting products! LOL

Re: An oberservation i made yesterday...

I think an "enhanced" natural beauty is prefered in Asia. So a lot of the colors to enhance features and are not as bold as what we like in the US. For example, a lot of pastel colors are used rather than bright, vivid blues/greens/purples. Also, paler complexions are considered more esthetic. Plus a lot of the trends that are popular throughout Asia originate from Korea and Japan.

The above description describes the mainstream population. I don't mean some of the Japanese fads of girls w/ *crazy* makeup.

I think Asians in the US vary, some like American style makeup, others may prefer the more "Asian" style makeup.

Just speaking from my perspective as an Asian-American.

Of course not. But this blog I frequent too - she gets all her stuff CPed and all tend to be cheaper then at the import stores here, in that sense.

Re: An oberservation i made yesterday...

I agree Celly! Damn stores here charging so much more

Most of the time, asian beauty communities have something called a "spree" which is a mass CP. Someone will have a spree for a couple of popular items, you place your order and they'll ship it to you later.

Re: An oberservation i made yesterday...

I think most asian make-up I see is very natural and healthy looking.

But, maybe this is a make-up trend thing, especially in magazines?
I've noticed that a lot of magazines have natural make-up on their cover stars lately...

I think I know what you mean, because in Asia, they sell some Shiseido skincare items way cheaper than the Shiseido that they sell in the US. It's not the same thing though. They have both drugstore products and higher end Shiseido products in Asia. But of the few drugstore Shiseido products I've tried -- I've liked them!

They also sell Shiseido and Kanebo shampoos.

See, I'd totally do stuff like that or shop online (since it seems certain sites are cheaper than the stores) but majority of them are in that dialog so I don't bother even putting the site through a translator haha. I'm like, eh...

Know of any sites in English, Ash?

Re: An oberservation i made yesterday...

it may be in part due to beauty ideals and standards...
some one posted this:

any way my point is a lot of books and stuff usually sugest colors that are more muted and what not for those with a lighter complection.

and since the beauty standard in america leans more towards a deeper skin you need more vibrant colors and more pigmented cosmetics to show up on those deeper skin tones.
