Questioning my eyeline application thanks to Aquilah ;P

I've been using make up since I was 15 or 16, I'm about 20 now, and really wanting to break away from old habits and start to mold into the new decade of life I'll be entering. I was going through the tutorial forum, browsing, and I saw Aquilah's tutorial for brown smokey eyes. It started my question of if I am doing something right....so lets see if you can help.

I apply my eyeliner of course to my top lid very close to the lashline, BUT I apply my bottom liner to the "inside" of my eye above where my lashes are. I have no idea where to apply it now!! I want to go for a softer look on my eyes, so I figure where I'm applying my liner might not only be wrong, but may make it look even more harsh?

What do you do, and where do you apply to get that "smudged to be softer" look?

Re: Questioning my eyeline application thanks to Aquilah ;P

Wow! I got called out again! LOL! j/k!! I apply eyeliner along my upper lashline, as well as my waterline... I just started applying liner along my bottom lashline since I joined MuT. I never tried it before joining. So, you're doing it right... From what it sounds like to me... You don't have to add the step of applying liner along your bottom lashline... Matter of fact, let me see if I have pics of how I used to do my makeup before joining here...

Here you go... This is from back in mid to late May... So I actually only recently started this sometime in June or July... Only my upper lashline and waterline are lined in this pic...

First off all Aquilah - I think you look BEAUTIFUL in that picture. Second of all Sincerely Me I don't think there's necessarily a right or wrong way to line your eyes. I've tried both lining my waterline and lining under my bottom lashes, and sometimes I don't line the bottom at all. I find that when I line my waterline, it makes my eyes lool wayyyy too small, and my eyes tend to be really watery so it never stays on anyway.

Thanks Heather! I have big eyes, so I almost have to line my waterline LOL! I would tightline, but I'm too lazy LOL!

And after you are done applying to waterline and bottom lashline, what do you use to smudge the liner to make it look "softer" or "smokier"?

Re: Questioning my eyeline application thanks to Aquilah ;P

Nope... I surely don't. In that tut, I used a pencil liner. Most times I use an e/s or pigment, or sometimes a Fluidline. Using an e/s seems to give it a softer look IMHO. I haven't learned how to smudge yet, so I dunno how to do it LOL! That's something I should learn to do LOL!

i love that pic of you, aquilah!

i do both, sincerely. for the bottom lid, as oppose to the inner rim, i just use eyeshadow because it's softer than liner!

Re: Questioning my eyeline application thanks to Aquilah ;P

You use an eyeliner brush, or something a little bigger to apply the shadow though, right? And wet it a bit?

You aren't doing anything "wrong" but you are just using a different method to line your eyes... If you want a much softer look try lining underneath your lashes instead of above them, and gently smudge the liner.

Yeah... I use an EOB or Posh Brush. I posted a pic... The smallest one on the right I use for my upper lashline, and the other two I use for either lashline. Sometimes I wet the shadow and sometimes I don't. Pigments generally I do have to wet them. The MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows work very well without needing to be wet IMHO.

How do you smudge the liner without rubbing it off or making it look like it shifted during the day? That's the issue with the smudging!

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. Those two brushes on the left look so big to apply shadow on your lashline, but thinking about it the point is to get it softer, so...I'll have to do that.

Anyone else?
