TV Interview face and hair help
Here I am pressing you all for still more suggestions...this time my question is what sort of makeup do you recommend for a television interview? And what do I do about that hair? I think on camera - even in most stills - it just sort of looks messy and all over the place.
And then we have the whole issue of wardrobing, since I pretty much live in jeans, khakis, turtlenecks and long sleeved t-shirts. Must do some shopping soon (hard since there's no stores here Thanks bunches - -b. |

Re: TV Interview face and hair help
For makeup, I suggest a "you but better look." You don't want something overly dramatic (ie. a smoky eye or glittery cheeks). Stay away from nudes as you can appear 'washed out' on camera.
Try Brown e/s with a darker matte brown e/s in the crease, a soft champagne shade on the browbone, and a brown liner on the upper lashes only. Wear mascara, but not too much-- you don't want clumpy lashes on camera (hehe) ! Wear a soft peach blush (MAC Peaches or Pinch o' Peach) with bronzer in the hollows of your cheeks to lightly contour. Wear a natural pinky lippie (MAC VGV is always reliable). Good luck!

Re: TV Interview face and hair help
My answer depends on where you're doing the interview. If it's in the studio then you're going to need more makeup than if the interview is inside with normal light or outside (I spent 6 years working as a reporter/anchor). Either way I suggest you do a test run first so that you're comfortable with the look. Anyway, for the studio you want to make sure you're wearing a darker foundation as the lights are so intense you'll look completely washed out if you apply it normally. What I always used was MAC Studio Fix in a shade or two darker than my normal colour...just make sure you blend it into your neck and be careful you don't get it on your clothes. Then lots of powder all over...again a shade darker. A trick for blush is to bring it up to the temple...blended of course...another good thing to do is contour under your cheekbones and running under your neck to make a little shadow and give you more definition. As for eyes...use colours that accentuate your eye colour...darker in the crease, lighter on the lid...just make sure to really define them...I used a dark brown shadow and lined the upper and lower lashes. Our station's makeup artist always made us load up on the mascara...very important. Don't forget your brows as well. Lips should not be glossy...just a nice neutral colour that compliments the whole look. By the way, all makeup should be MATTE colours as anything with any hint of shimmer/frost will not look good...trust me! the light bounces off it. Finish with bronzer. If you're in natural or regular artifical light do the same thing, just tone it down a little. As for clothing...nothing with any kind of crazy pattern or design. No white...there can be a bit of white...just not a white shirt for example (does crazy things to the camera's iris...it will focus on the white and adjust the other colours accordingly which makes everything else look weird). Remeber that it's just going to be a head and shoulders shot...so make sure you're not wearing a low cut top. But, most importantly, focus on what you're going to be talking about, and have fun...good luck!

Wow! Go Janna!!!
Nice reply! As far as hair, I think polished and smooth would be the way to go... if it's straight - use a light shine serum to keep it laying flay without flyaways... and if it curly/wavy... use a smoothing cream and do some face framing "perfect" curls with a curling iron - since that is what will be seen mostly.

Re: TV Interview face and hair help
This is amazing - such awesome advice!
Janna, thank you for your detailed recommendations! I really appreciate your expertise! And Janelle, thanks so much for the hair advice - it is naturally curly, and that's got me worried a bit. Been practicing with the curling iron lately, trying to get it to look a bit more controlled and polished without looking tortured. I think I'll get it! Vanessa, thank you so much for the reminder to be "me only better"! I'll definitely go with the more neutral skin colors - shades with red and orange and brown in them! And Marian, thank you for the wardrobe advice! I've settled on a chocolate brown pantsuit with either a sage green silk blouse that has a smallish brown and cream geometric floral - like a foulard pattern, or a seafoam green tie-neck sweater underneath. I could also just wear a cami underneath the jacket and fill in the neckline with a scarf in shades of brown, gold, russet and black - I'll have to play with that a bit. Ladies, I thank you so much for all your help and support and advice. The interviews are rather a big deal for us - they are national television pertaining to a criminal matter. I'm not worried about the interview itself - the television people are so nice and friendly and approachable, and the camera crews have done work at our home already, so we know and like them. But I've really been stressing about the whole appearance/image thing. Your advice is really putting me at ease! Thanks bunches, and hugs. After it's all over I'll let you know when they'll air! -b. |

Re: TV Interview face and hair help
One final question on this tired topic, and then no more - I promise!
Regarding eye shadows, is a little *shimmer*, like a pearly finish, ok at all? I usually use something with some luster as my lid color, then a matte in the crease and to line, and a soft shimmer on the brow bone. No shimmer anywhere else...is even that too much? Will I be better off with only mattes? Thanks, gals! |

, but trust me, don't use any, especially on the browbone! It really just washes people out and makes them look tired. What happens is the light bounces off the shimmer...and the camera has to open it's iris to adjust to that, which throws off all the colours. This is the same reason people aren't supposed to wear lots of white on camera. I know when you're doing your makeup your probably going to be thinking, "boring", but I promise you will thank me later when you see how you look. My formula...matte highlighter and wash, darker matte e/s in the crease = bright, sparkling eyes and a perky face. Watch the news tonight and really focus on what the anchors have on...you will see they all have a similar look, because it works! I hope that helps...let us know how it goes! Janna |

Re: TV Interview face and hair help
Janna, thank you so, so much! I've been really paying attention to news people lately, and I have to tell you, Montana isn't the best place to be if you want to see makeup done right
Even (or perhaps especially) on our anchors.I promise to stay away from shimmer, pearl, gleam, all of it, and just go matte matte matte! I am forever indebted to you for your sage advice! -b. |
