Quilting

Does anyone quilt?

I want to make a quilt for my king size bed. I've never made one before and now I have it in my head to make one.

Any suggestions/tips would be appreciated!

Re: Quilting

I've never quilted, but I've always wanted to!! My grandmother quilted. She actually made me a lovely mondo quilt that I just adored, but it was lost during a move

Let's see if any of the ladies have tips and I'll check for resources on the net.

Re: Quilting

I would start with a lap quilt first before jumping into a king size. That is how I started with quilting. There are a ton of beginner quilt books out there. Try the library, it's free. Book and fabric stores have them if you want to buy one. You could also make a duvet. I have made two. I hope this helps you out. Good luck!

Re: Quilting

I've never quilted before, but John's aunt knows how. It's one of the many things I wish I knew how to do though *lol*

Re: Quilting

i've been putting off jumping into the quilting thing, but i've been wanting to for ages!
i'll probably hit up the library and try it out sometime soon and see how i do!
my grandmother (who died before my 1st birthday) made the most gorgeous quilts that we still have. although i never knew her, i like to keep her spirit alive by continuing her types of crafts. i taught myself to sew, knit, and crochet all in her memory, and quilting was definitely something she was known for.

Re: Quilting

I've been a "beginner" quilter for about 15 years. I say beginner because I'm not where I want to be in skill yet. I checked out books at the library. You may want to look for books by Eleanor Burns. There have been other quilters that followed her, but I can't think of some good ones for you now. Do you have any quilt stores in your area? They often give beginner classes. Taking a class will be worth every penny. A good instructor will give you so many tips. At our local technical college, they have a six week course for about $50.00. I want my husband's aunt to take the course. She's over 62, so they give seniors a huge discount. It would cost her $5.00 for a six week class!

Do you have a sewing machine right now or do you have to purchase one? My brain is so full of quilting info, but I need to have you give me a better picture of your location to a quilt store. You need to have someone help you with a beginner pattern so you don't fail. I just finished a baby quilt that has over 1000 small pieces in it. It was the quilt from hell. Ya, things look great in the magazines, you get sucked in, then I find out it's the baby quilt from hell.

I live about 60 miles from Nancy's Notions. Nancy Zieman has a PBS show, Sewing with Nancy. Every May, she has teachers come in for classes and she has a HUGE warehouse sale. I'm going to miss the sale this year because I have spent so much in makeup. My husband can't believe that I'm not going to go. My guest bedroom is overflowing with quilt fabric so that's another reason why I need to have control.

Re: Quilting

I used to do sewing classes at camp and quilting was one of the skills I learned. It's very fun, but I would definitely start small rather than throwing yourself into making a king-sized quilt. I also don't have a sewing machine, so I have to do it by hand - not that I've done it in forever, but I remember how.

Re: Quilting

You dont want to jump into a king sized quilt right off. Start small, make sure you enjoy it. You won't feel like your accomplishing anything if you start with a huge project.

Re: Quilting

My mum is an avid quilter, she has been quilting for years. She has TONS of really good quilting websites that she goes to often, they have patterns, tips etc. When she gets home I'll ask her for them and I'll post them up for you. I've done a little bit of quilting myself, I just started off with a basic 9 patch block and went from there. It's a lot of fun, and like any art and craft it's a matter or trial and error, eventually you'll get into your own style and you'll be hooked, I know my Mum is, you should see her fabric stash lol I agree with mrsjones1217 start off with something small and work your way up. Even if it's just start off with a couple of blocks, then you can build them up and maybe turn them into your quilt.

Just for a little show and tell, this is the quilt that my Mum made for me for my 18th birthday last year.

Re: Quilting

I've research quilting before to see if it was something I could do, but I just never ever tried it. Someday I would like to sit down and actually try it.

Re: Quilting

Oy, no, I've never tried. I want to though, sometime. Show us all when/if you do/finish it?
