Tips on organizing your sewing room

What tips can you share on organizing the sewing room?

So far I have a cork board above my sewing table in which I pin the instructions of my pattern on.

Also I pruchased and organized which is a pocketed placemate that fits under the sewing machine and the pockets hang off the table. I keep the scissors, seam ripper, hem gauge etc in the pockets.

Any other tips.

I am having a hard time with keeping my threads from unraveling off the spools. I've been taping them

Re: Tips on organizing your sewing room

1) take a piece of felt or jersey and wrap it around the top of the sewing machine (where the handle is on a home machine) and safety pin it into place. this way, when you're sewing, you can put your straight pins into the felt instead of keeping them in a dish (which will inevitably fall off the table and onto the floor). an alternative is to buy a magnetic pin catcher and put it on the sewing machine to catch pins (but you cannot do this to computerized machines).
2) buy a wall mounted thread bed to organize your threads, you can hang small objects such as tape measures and thread snips from the bottom rungs
3) plastic tackle boxes can be used as a cheaper alternative to a sewing basket. they usually have more compartments for smaller notions

I bought a long board with coat hooks attached. I nailed it to the wall and hang all my scissors from it by the handles. Looks so professional. Keeps all scissors visible...

Great advice.

How do you ladies store patterns? I'm especially interested in self-drafted ones. I don't know whether to hang them, fold them,...

I keep my slopers on pattern hooks, that I hang in the back of my closet. A visual reference of what they look like is in the below link:
http://www.steinlaufandstoller.com/Workroom%20Tools.htm

for purchased patterns (or patterns I've done on tissue weight pattern paper), I just fold up and put in a drawer.

If you ever see a fabric store going out of business, you can usually buy their pattern cabinets when they're liquidating the store. One of my friends did that and loves keeping her patterns in them.

Re: Tips on organizing your sewing room

I just took pictures of my sewing room for reference after we move into the new house. I have a hard time thinking of things that might be tricks or helpful, so I thought I'd just share my pics and that might be helpful.

BTW, I keep my stor bought patterns in shoe boxes with labels like tops, skirts, etc. My drafted patterns I keep in labled envelopes in a clear plastic storage box.
