What do you rec for cheaper/easier alternative
I'm trying to make these square wall decor
It's just scrapbook paper on styrofoam squares with ribbons to cover the edges. Here's the site with instructions (they used a kit) but I decided to do this and pick out everything on my own. However, at michaels they have styrofoam that I can cut up to perfect sizes but it would cost me about $20+ and I really want to make this dirt cheap. I looked in home depot for insulation styrofoam but their sheets are massive and I'm not sure how to get a straight clean cut. So is there a cheap alternative I can use for the base, I have all my scrapbook papers, but I'm waiting for something to stick it on It wouldn't look as good if I just taped the papers straight onto my wall

get small canvas, blank and ready to be painted on. they're usually sold in craft stores, i don't remember the prices but i'm sure it would be a cheaper alternative. then you can glue whatever you like on them, and then you just need to hang them on the wall. six little studs later, voilą !

It looks great! $20 per square? or total? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I just want to clarify.

Re: What do you rec for cheaper/easier alternative
Use posterboard or cardboard.
Just cut it into squares and then cut small squares from each corner like this:
And then you can fold it and tape/glue it to make a box that's missing one side. The side that's missing will go against the wall. Then you can cover that with the decorative paper that you have or even patterned fabric would work.
It would be really lightweight, but no one would really know unless they touched them...

Re: What do you rec for cheaper/easier alternative
it's 21 dollars for 3 strips which i have to cut into 9 squares (I know $20 is nothing, but I just don't want to spend that for this)
Canvas I already checked them out, they are much more expensive ($5 min. each) and they enver come in squares.
the cardboard idea is great, now I just have to get myself some lol.

Re: What do you rec for cheaper/easier alternative
hm..but with cardboard, don't you lose the dimension of the styrofoam? It would be almost flat against the wall, while the styrofoam sticks out about an inch.

Not if you make it into a box like I suggested.

Re: What do you rec for cheaper/easier alternative
I did this using those plastic box picture frames I got at Walgreens. Mine were on clearance,(I got 9 for $4.50!) but they are usually only around $1, and I have also seen them at various dollar stores. Hope that helps.
Or use small pizza boxes that breadsticks come in. We eat a lot of pizza and I have become quite adept at pizza box crafts. Lol.

Re: What do you rec for cheaper/easier alternative
That is too cute! I'd spend the $20 for the styrofoam personally, but that's just me. I might have to try this little craft out!

i need 9 squares hence $7 x 3 = 9 squares = $21 lol.
For now I"m just gonna tape them to my wall as this was a summer project and now I'm going back to school, I'll pick it up again when I have the time.
