Oops, I did it again...Alima

Oh what a bad influence this board is...here I was happy as a clam with my LaurEss and then...the sample monster struck me!!

I just ordered a bunch of samples from Alima. (Mineral Makeup, Natural Mineral Cosmetics, Sensitive Skin Care | Alima Pure) Some foundations, primer, & finisher. I tried them back when I was just looking into MMU (almost 2 years ago) and I didn't care for it, but I was still getting the application technique down. It's a little more expensive than Lauress so I won't be too upset if I don't love it, but I liked it enough to want to give it another attempt. Most people seem to either love it or hate it so I guess we'll see.

I don't really care for their new website. Those pull out menus are a pain in the you-know-what. It took me forever to get my order in there cuz I had to keep trying to get those pull out menus to stay open.

I'm a little concerned that they took away the Light Yellow Finisher. I'm definitely more golden than neutral, but I went with what the site suggested, so we'll see...

I bought a sample of the lipbalm too. I like Everyday Minerals lipcolors but it's always good to have options. (or so I tell myself)

Has anyone tried Everyday Minerals lipsticks since I think they changed the packaging into tubes? Or am I wrong and it's still in pots?

I didn't think Alima was more expensive than Lauress the last time I looked anyway? I always think Lauress seems so expensive, but maybe that's just my perception -
I like Alima's new website though - I think it's very "classy".
You are right - Everyday Minerals lip colors are in tubes now. They are much more pigmented than the ones in pots were. EM is having so many problems right now though -

I took another look, looks like overall you're right. Alima is a little bit more expensive in foundation but not by a whole lot.

Lauress Foundation is 10g for $22.00
Alima is 7.5g for $20

Shimmer Blush
Lauress: 3.5g for $16
Alima: 5g for $15

Eyeshadow
Lauress is 2g for $11
Alima is 2.5g for $9

Well great, there goes that reasoning! LOL

Ah, I see EM is having some shipping problems. Hopefully they'll get everything squared away!

Sampling never seems to end in MMU!
I don't think their website now is very impressive. I liked the old look, it was very white and light and crisp and they showed powder in rose petals to decorate the pages which I thought was a great image for a velvety soft makeup. This new one looks too bold/heavy for my taste.

I got the notification it shipped today so hopefully next week I'll have some updated reviews to see if I changed my mind about them.

Re: Oops, I did it again...Alima

I ordered some Alima yesterday too. I haven't had a good week and although I couldn't really afford it, I've been wanting to try Alima's brushes forever so I took advantage of the 15% off and ordered a foundation brush, blush brush, and the angled brow/liner brush plus some samples and the LE gelato collection they have right now. They also have a GWP of 3 e/s for orders over 75 dollars so of course with those brush purchases I made that (LOL) - and I got free shipping because my total was high enough. I ordered early yesterday morning and it shipped already yesterday (YAY) so I am hoping to receive it quickly. I have heard really great things about Alima's packaging and products in general so I'm really excited to receive my order.

Sim, you would probably love Alima as their c/s is one of the best out there and they have very fast shipping. I definitely think it would be worth trying for you. The word I've heard used to describe Alima over and over again is "classy."

I've heard nothing but good things about their brushes so I think taking advantage of the summer sale was a perfect idea!

Re: Oops, I did it again...Alima

Got my samples today! Unfortunately I think I'm heading down the wrong direction here. In Lauress I wear Radiant Gold, so I went for the Golden shades but I think by Golden they mean Yellow. I did a swatch on my arm and none of them really seemed good. G-1 may work, but may be too white/light. G-2 seemed pretty bright yellow. G3 and G-4 were way too deep yellow. I'm wondering if I should go with the warms? I'm just nervous that since I'm only tan maybe 1 month of the year, that they'll be too brown most of the time. I e-mailed their customer service for advice, so we'll see...

On another note, I think I really like the lip gloss. Just a hint of color and it feels very smooth!

I still have to try the primer, concealer, and finisher samples (I'm at work!) ;D

In case it helps you, in LaurEss my best match is a close call between Radiant Gold and Radiant Ivory, Alima's W2 worked pretty well for me.

Perfect! Thank you! I am trying G1 today at work and it's a wee too yellow. I tried W0 through W2 a year or so ago but I really had no clue what I was doing so I wrote it off as no good but there was something about them that made me want to try again.

I just ordered W1-W4 samples just before I read your post so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I really like their eyeshadows and blushes. I think the freebies with my orders keep me coming back for more since I have no confidence in myself to choose e/s & blush colors for myself.

Coverage is pretty good. No shiny T-zone which is good. It seems to melt into the skin like Lauress, not overly powdery or matte but I'd say more matte than Lauress Elemental. I like the finish but it's hard to say for sure really since the color is wrong.

I used my Lauress flat top to apply it since it looks similar to Alima's #25.

Strange thing though is last night I put some on and looked airbrushed in the mirror but my pictures came out horrible. I don't know if it was the lighting or the light off the minerals but I looked shiney and off-color at the same time. Blech. Of course that partly could be because the color IS off.

Re: Oops, I did it again...Alima

I placed my second sample order Tuesday after hearing back from their MUA to try W1, W2, B1,& B2. I told her I wore Radiant Gold in Lauress as a starting point. She said the Goldens are more for Asian skintones and would be too yellow for me (yup, she was right!) I told her I have golden undertones, but not yellow and not peachy (I don't freckle in the sun). I also ordered another lipgloss sample in acai.

It shipped yesterday so I should have it Saturday or Monday! Whee!

But I have to sit myself down and tell myself, "Self, if none of these work, you have to admit defeat with Alima foundation." And then that other voice says, "Okay, but what about Silk Naturals?" Oh I can't win!

Re: Oops, I did it again...Alima

Got my samples today! Very Quick. 2 days from Oregon to Ohio via priority mail. Yay! I think one of these is going to work. Beige is not as brown as I thought it was, it does have a goldish warm hue to it. I can't wait to try them. They've really improved since I ordered samples over a year ago. The packaging is much more professional than it was. The free samples used to seem kind of random but the last 2 orders I just got had 2 eyeshadows (one lighter matte, one darker shimmer) and a matte blush that all work together which makes it very easy to try it all out at the same time. So far it's a very good impression! Now to see if there's a foundation color match to be found!

I like the eyeshadows, the colors are not vibrant so if you like bold eye colors, this line is probably not for you. But if you like a more natural, enhanced look these work beautifully for a subtle effect. The matte blush applies light as well, I may see if applying more brings out more color but I just used the amount I use in other blushes for comparison. Again, soft muted color that looks natural. I'll see if I can get some pics posted this weekend.

Anyone else trying samples now? Carmonious, did you get your package?
