Re: Boron nitride

I found a description from this company's website. I don't know how true this is but I don't want it on my skin.

Cosmetic Ingredient Safety - Wellness-, Health- and Wellbeing-Blog

Boron (Boron Nitride)

Boron occurs in the earths crust, in the form of its compounds, never as the element. Salts of boron are commonly used as antiseptic agents, although toxicologists warn of its possible adverse reactions. Borates are able to be absorbed by the mucous membranes and can cause intestinal bleeding, skin rash and central nervous system stimulation. It is claimed that as a supplement it increases the production of testosterone. Again, while thinking about the many penetration enhancers that are in cosmetic products, we do not see it as a safe ingredient and do not use it in our Ion Cosmetics© products.

Re: Boron nitride

as with anything, I think it depends on your source of information. Silk Naturals uses this ingredient and this is what it says on their website about it -

Boron Nitride- Provides coverage, and helps to condition skin. It also makes the makeup more durable. Boron is an essential nutrient that is important for building strong cell walls (source - Silk Naturals website ingredient list)
Meow uses it too in their Flawless Feline formula. I tried to go to their website and look and see if they give any info about it, but I can't get into their website right now. I'll check again later and update if it has any info.

I checked Meow's website and they don't give any info on the specific ingredients. They do use boron nitride in several of their products though.

Re: Boron nitride

I'm still gonna avoid this ingredient. Why take the chance when there are so many companies to choose from out there?

Re: Boron nitride

This is what I found on TKB:

Quote:
Our Boron Nitride is a soft, silky white mineral powder. It is used as an additive to improve the "slip" of a product (how smoothly the product applies) as well as "adhesion" (how long it stays on the skin).

Boron Nitride is a natural, inert mineral and it is a useful additive to foundations, concealers, eye shadows, lipsticks, skin creams and face and body powders.
Maybe one of our mmu blenders could explain more?

Re: Boron nitride

Boron and Boron Nitride are not the same thing, just as Hydrogen and H20 (water) are not the same thing. Boron Nitride is an inert ceramic material that does not react with most chemicals. It does not even react with Oxygen until it reaches over 800 C (1400 F). The material is used to line troughs that hold molten Aluminum. It is used as a container to grow crystals at high temperatures, because it does not react with the molten contents. Because it is so inert and doesn't react with anything, it is commonly used as a cosmetic sensory enhancer. As an additive to cosmetic formulations, it uniquely combines high lubricity with good adherence to the skin, and it has wrinkle-hiding properties. Many materials are lubricious, and many materials adhere. Boron Nitride combines both properties. Its lubricity is due to its platelet structure, similar to a stack of Poker cards that slide easily over one another.

Re: Boron nitride

Yeah I was pretty much going to say what jonrleist said......boron nitride is just an inert ceramic... it feels like a baby's butt, can add a nice sheen to the skin, imporves skin adherence, and blurs lines and wrinkes due to the shap of the platlets.......I see no reason for not using it a cosmetic.

Re: Boron nitride

So it is not absorbed by the mucous membranes like around eyes, lips, and the inner nose?

Re: Boron nitride

Laurie, the information on the website you posted states that borates are the ones absorbed by mucose membranes. Borates (one example of which is borax) have a very different chemical composition from boron nitride, and certainly would be something I would not want near my skin. As jonrleist mentioned, just because two compounds contain the same element, it does not mean they share the same properties.

Now, it'd be interesting to see if there are specific studies regarding the absorption of boron nitride.

Re: Boron nitride

According to this specific cosmetics safety database, boron nitride seems to be pretty safe:
