Flocked Sponge & damp application mishaps

I am technically challenged when it comes to using sponges with foundation (liquid & mineral powder). I read the other threads on how to apply with a flocked sponge. I have the Aubrey Nicole flocked sponge. I wet my sponge a little (I don't have an a spray bottle yet) then dab it on some mineral foundation powder. When I apply it to my face, nothing but a drop gets on my face, the rest of the minerals are soaked up in the sponge!

I tried to do it with a dry sponge & a damp sponge and the minerals still absorbed into the sponge and not on my face. I thought the sponge was dysfunctional so I used a foundation sponge and the same thing happened.

I tried the wet technique with a damp powder brush & a damp kabuki and the minerals seem to stick on the bristles. I tried this with Lumiere, Alima, and Meow Pampered Puss.

I am trying out Alima this week and I really think I need to use the sponge for top layer because Alima shows my pores & looks heavy on me. I know I'm heavy-handed with my minerals since its not in a sifter jar (sample) so maybe this is my fault. Anyways, if anyone has any tips on what I'm doing wrong with my sponge & brush and how to fix it, let me know. Thanks.

That's too funny! I have to confess that I've never used a wet sponge to apply my mmu foundation - only a damp applicator to apply my eyeshadow. The same happened to me but of course on a much smaller scale (simply because the sponge applicator is smaller). I stopped using the sponge applicators and switched over to using a concealor brush or shading brush to apply my mineral eye shadow, and I have to say I prefer it this way - both the application process and the finished result. I wouldn't want to "paint" it on my face this way though. I guess it could work well if you have a really bad blemish which you need covered, however, I wouldn't use it to paint my entire face.

What I have done in applying my mmu damp, is I use a damp not wet kabuki. It allowed the minerals to cling to the brush as I swept it over my face. I had liked using it this way, but then grew tired of the wet approach and went back to using it dry. I now use the flat top and don't wet it. I find that I'm able to layer the makeup better this way until I get the coverage I want. It doesn't take too long either.

As far as applying the mineral makeup with a wet flocked sponge, I really don't have any tips to offer you. Maybe someone else has some experience. For me, I think it would just be too heavy a coverage (once you finally get it off of the sponge and onto your face) and as you're experiencing, the sponge is holding a lot of the makeup.

Wish I could help you out more.

Re: Flocked Sponge & damp application mishaps

What really works for me is applying the foundation with a dry kabuki/flat top, spraying my face with a hydrosol such as evian/avene, then buffing/smoothing with the flocked sponge.

Re: Flocked Sponge & damp application mishaps

Flocked sponges work much better dry, IMO. Even using brushes with the wet method, less water is best--just a few very fine mists.

Re: Flocked Sponge & damp application mishaps

Thanks for the tips. i guess splashing my face with water doesn't yield the same effect as misting. I will look into getting a bottle that I can use to mist/spray water on my brush or face.

You can find them very cheap [<$2] at Sally's. If you have access to a Container Store, they also sell some terrific small mister bottles.

Another vote for getting a mister. I spray it twice onto the flocked sponge, then pick up the powder. After that, I only spray once. I apply the second layer dry. It's been working great.
