Mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
Hello,
I need your advice one more time
I noticed some strange thing... When I apply dry mineral foundation to my dry, not moisturized face (I use Fusion of Color) then my shade "ivory" is light enough and matches my skin tone perfectly... But when I apply some oil (I use walnut oil or squalane) all over my face just before applying (I don't wait for it to dry) my mineral foundation, then the Ivory shade gets a few tones darker and it is too dark for me ....
Is that normal? How can I apply my mineral foundation wet without this happening ?
Thank you in advance!
Just an idea
Maybe walnut oil is responsible for darkening my foundation? I have to compare how my foundation looks like on squalane and walnut oil....

Re: mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
Depending on the formula some minerals will turn darker when they come into contact with oil. Try letting the oil soak-in for a few minutes before you apply your minerals and that should help. If you want to apply your makeup wet- mixing them with a moisturizer or aloe vera gel will work better. They don't have as much oil in them and shouldn't discolor the makeup.
Good luck!

Thank you for your advice!
Yes you was right! I did an experiment and I spritzed my wrist with moisturizing spray and after that I applied mineral foundation to it and no discoloration happened!
Thank you!

Most things are darker when wet.. Think of your hair when you wash it, a sponge, etc. Mineral makeup is not different. It always gets a little bit darker when wet.

Re: mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
Hi
I use FOC also and if I use an oil this happens (and with a couple other companies) with Aloe Vera it doesn't but to dry for me. If I use a cream it doesn't happen most of the time depending on the cream. What I do is spritiz my sponge or brush with some hydrosols or such and then put on my minerals witha damp brush or sponge

Re: mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
I'm glad you started this thread. It's so coincidental. I was going to start one for the same reason.
I bought some Emu Oil from AN. I read that it is suppose to help with many things, so I thought I would try it. I put it on in place of my moisturizer and did my MMU application as normal. When I got to work and looked in the mirror, I was like "ewwww!!". My face looked terrible! My MMU was DARK. My face was all shiny and my pores were everywhere! I thought I screwed something up so I used the Emu Oil again the next day. I got the same horrible result. The next day I DID NOT use the Emu Oil and my MMU looked great again.
Based on my experiments I have found Emu Oil darkens my MMU terribly. It stays that way too. My skin looked progressively worse as the day went on. I looked like an oil slick. My face looked worse than when I got all oily with traditional liquid makeup.
The Emu Oil ruined my Pure Luxe Eraser application too. The oil totally cancels out the Eraser. My pores and lines are magnified by 10 with the Emu Oil on. I use Eraser to blur those lines and pores. It DOES NOT work with Emu Oil on.
I will still use the Emu Oil before I go to bed to see if it does anything. I will NEVER use any kind of oil with my MMU application again. Oil and Pure Luxe Eraser does not mix! Oil and MMU does not mix!!!

Re: mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
I always use coconut oil at night instead of night cream to get the benefits but not mess up my mmu. When I apply sunscreen I blot the oils before putting on my primer.

I'm glad it wasn't just me!! I stopped using Emu Oil because even though my skin became more supple, my pores were getting larger and larger. Squalane, on the other hand works fine.

Re: mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
Hi Lilita,
I loveyour blog. Your swatches has helped me pick out which samples to try. Thanks so much!!
I moisterise with olive oil (yesterday I dabbed some Emu on my upper lip) and so far my MMU hasn't changed. I make sure it is fully absorbed into my skin then I put on primer before applying MMU.

Did you apply the emu oil to dry skin? When moisturizing with oils, they work much better if you dampen your face first then rub the oil onto your face - it only takes a couple of drops. The oils don't actually moisturize your skin; they help retain moisture. Applying the oils to a damp face works much better - you get the softness and moisture without the greasiness. I use Jojoba and/or Ultra Emu Oil, and my MMU application is fine.
Just thought I'd share in case you hadn't tried that.

Re: Mineral foundation + oil = too dark shade?
I dont have a problem applying coconut oil prior to mmu. It makes my mmu look better. But previously my foundation became darker because I wasnt wearing any primer. Or it could also be due to the mmu brand.
Anyway does anyone realise that you cant use acids or exfoliants before applying mmu? I find that it makes my mmu go on patchy. Also the more stuff I put on my face affects how my mmu will look. I actually tried and tested different stuff I put on my face to decide which makes my mmu go on better or worse.

My Emu Oil doesn't absorb. I use a tiny amount and it just sits there. So far Emu Oil is only working for me at night. It's disappointing I can't use it with my MMU. The few nights I've used it I can tell my skin is softer.
Thanks for the application suggestion Entipy! I will post when I try it.

I know folks who use acids and/or exfoliants before putting on make-up, but I think there are certain ways you have to do it. I know that after you apply a BHA and/or AHA, you should wait 30 minutes then moisturize. Then apply your make-up after your moisturizer has absorbed.

I think you'll find it absorbs much better when you use the water! Also, if Emu is too heavy for you to use prior to make-up application, you could continue to use it at night and use a lighter oil like Jojoba for pre-MMU moisturizing. Also, the type of Emu oil can make a difference. Let me know how it works with the water. And, seriously, you only need a couple of drops for your whole face when you use water!
