Ok, dumb question. How do you apply primer?

I have searched on "face primer" and gotten some great recommendations on brands, but exactly *how* do you use the stuff? Do you just smooth a thin layer over your whole face, let dry, and then put your makeup on? Don't let it dry? Or is there some super secret way to do it?

TIA!!

Re: Ok, dumb question. How do you apply primer?

coincidentally... I started using Silica powder (from TKBtrading) as a primer this morning and it didn't quite work out for me.

I dusted my whole face with the silica using a powder brush, and then when I buffed on my foundation I could see little dry white flakes coming off my cheeks! With further buffing, the flakes all came off and my skin was smooth and looked "poreless" (or was that the Lumiere? LOL) Anyway, I later learnt from a mmu friend that I should have used a kabuki/flat top brush to BUFF on the silica in exactly the same way I apply my foundation. <-- Will try this tomorrow.

BTW, I used Pure Luxe eraser in the past and the same thing happened. Little flakes (eraser?) came off my face when I buffed on my foundation. One thing I don't quite understand - If you are applying your foundation WET, wouldn't this mess up your layer of primer?

You apply a primer just like you apply your moisturizer. I let it sink in 'till my skin feels dry again, but it doesn't take that long. Once it sunk in, I apply my make-up. I use Smashbox Photo Finish btw.

Ok...

I know of primers for eyes. But what I don't get is for the face...

what's it's purpose exactly? Have makeup stay put?
Cuz when I apply foundation (which is never) or concealor - MU tends to wear off soon there after.

Primer has 2 major purposes:
1. It smooths out your skin. If you aren't blessed with a natural even skin, this will do the trick! Because your skin is more even after you applied, your foundation will look better as well. It makes the end result look more flawless. (My primer also makes pores and small lines less visible, but I'm not sure if all primers do that.)
2. Makes your make-up in general last longer and keeps the colours safe. If you use a primer, you don't need to worry that your foundation will change colours on you during the day.

I apply a very thin layer. I don't think you would like the feel after a few hours if you applied it very thick.

Re: Ok, dumb question. How do you apply primer?

I've tried Pure Luxe gel/cream eraser and the first few applications I tried to spread it on in a thin layer which didn't really work very well. The eraser started to 'ball up' and looked pretty bad. I figured out the way to apply it is to pat it on the problem areas in tiny amounts until it 'disappears' into your skin. This worked much better to fill in my pores and tone down redness (I used What Red?). I still don't know how it would work if foundation was applied wet on top of it though...
