Same thing with mine. A lot of animal hair brushes smell like that when you wash them, though once they have dried, the smell goes away, it's just whilst the hair of the brushes are wet.

Just wash yours brushes and the smell goes away for ever
I wash mine with a organic soap or "savon d'alep" or a "soap from weleda"
For European, here : for the organic soap : "Savon liquide Gravier"
Savon d'alep ou savon de Marseille des produits de tradition.
The essentials oils in the composition of soap help to smell good and "désinfecter" the brushes.
For American women, the brand like Aubrey Organic or Burt's bees are good too.
