Dry mouth and sinusitis

I live in a very dry climate and am ALWAYS dealing with dry mouth and sinusitis.

Because of that, I sound hoarse all the time I drink alot of water, I do the humidifier, the nasal sprays, sinus rinses and even Biotene and other oral moisturizers.

They work for awhile, but then it goes back to the same thing and it's frustrating.

If you know of any OTC drugstore solutions OR any herbal supplements from the health food store....PLEASE let me know.

It soo sucks to have people ask you all the time "Do you have a cold? What's wrong with your voice?"...it interferes with my work and is depressing.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: Dry mouth and sinusitis

it's probably a dumb question, but have you considered asking a doctor his opinion ?

i know what helps me during winter is a thyme infusion. dry or fresh thyme in a cup filled with hot water. you let it brew for 20 minutes, then filter the infusion and add some honey for a nicer taste. it kills a starting cold, but i don't know if it's effective in a dry climate. if you don't have thyme at home, i've seen prepacked bags of thyme infusion in healthfood stores.

A Neti Pot will work wonders! My husband uses his every day and he has not had a sinus infection for several months! =)

Re: Dry mouth and sinusitis

perhaps you should consult a head and neck doctor? i'm not a doc but from what you said, it sounds like you may have blocked nasal passages that are forcing you to breathe through your mouth. hence the dryness of the mouth and the sounding stuffed up all the time. do you have trouble breathing through your nose? in situations like these, OTC remedies may not work and your doc can prescribe some things that will help open those nasal passages back up.

Re: Dry mouth and sinusitis

Thank you, ladies!

Yeah, I have talked to my DR. about it and she prescribed beconase which is a good nasal decongestant. But, expensive.

The neti pot DOES work! I picked up one and tried it earlier and...wow! It stings, but it works.

I made an appt with an ENT for Monday just to see what she has to say. It never hurts to go ahead and check things out.

Thanks again!

Re: Dry mouth and sinusitis

Oh, another suggestion would be applying a bit of sweet almond oil on your nose, so it gets less dry - my mom uses that when she travels by plane (mind you, we live practically under water here, so any dryness is strange.)

Re: Dry mouth and sinusitis

Thank you for that

I did read that if you use sesame oil or almond oil and put it in your mouth (I think it's called "Oil pull" or something like that), gargle with it until it turns white and foamy and DON'T swallow it because then it has the bacteria from your mouth in it....spit it out and for some reason, it unclogs sinuses.

I'm a big holistic, health freak person and would rather use natural vs. pharmaceutical meds any day. Because, for centuries, the asian and american indian have used herbs and it has always helped them.

At this point, I'll talk to my ENT and see what she says and will give ya all a follow up on it.
