Thumbs down Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

About 700,000 Americans a year undergo elective laser surgery. Of those, several thousand suffer serious, life-changing side effects, such as worse vision, severe dry eye, glare, and inability to drive at night.
Patients harmed by Lasik eye surgery recently told federal health advisers stories of severe eye pain, blurred vision and even a son's suicide after six years of eye pain and impaired vision. The advisers recommended that the government warn more clearly about the risks of the popular operations.
The FDA advisers recommended that warnings be given to would-be Lasik patients on certain side effects they may endure after the treatment. Spell out that anyone whose nearsightedness is fixed by Lasik is guaranteed to need reading glasses in middle age, which could be avoided if they skip Lasik.

Re: Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

I know a lot of people that have had lasik. I am actually palnning on getting this done in the next year or so.... To be able to wake up and not reach for my glasses or contacts... to me that will be amazing! I am extremely farsighted. I don't buy into a lot of these statistics personally b/c ever surgery and person is different and there is always a chance of a risk. I went through the same thing with the birth of my second child...they told me because my first was an emergency c-section that my second had to be and that the riks were very high smthing would happen to the baby or me. I searched and searched and I finally found a good doctor and I had my second baby naturally. Just my take on this is all...

Re: Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

eye surgery is always risky, but i think finding a good doctor and get a lot of good info on the eye surgery desired minimalize those risks.

Re: Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

I am near sighted. The surgery might correct this problem. But what happens when I will need bifocals. Will I have to spend another $1000-2000 and undergo more surgery or am I stuck wearing glasses again?

Thanks for posting Ricci

Re: Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

I am extremely nearsighted (my eyeglass prescription is -9.0!). I started wearing glasses when I was 10 years old, and each year after that, my vision has gotten worse, but I think it's finally at its peak now. I really want to get lasik done, and I know some people who have had it done and their vision is now perfect, but then again, their vision wasn't as bad as mine to begin with. I'm waiting until my 25th birthday because I've heard that it's the recommended minimum age, so I have more than a year left to do all my research and whatnot. I'd really like to hear from anyone that has had the procedure done.

Re: Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

I'm really nearsighted and am a -9.0 too. I actually talked to my eye doctor about having lasik done and was told that it is an option even though my eyes are 'tricky' (astigmatism also).

The magic age is supposedly 25 when your eyes stop changing and you can have the surgery done. Thank goodness my eyes stopped changing before! I'd have the surgery done. I know a lot of people who've had it done successfully and it's been done long enough that they know some long term effects.

And the techniques are only getting better. I think it's like any other surgery - there are always going to be complications and problems with some people. everyone is different. definitely get a good dr. if you do it. Eyes are important!

Re: Many Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery

Well that sux. I don't think i'd ever really want lasik correction but i have noticed that my eye sight just keeps getting worse every year. I guess i'll just stick to my glasses for now. I think I'd rather just deal with contacts then take such a permanent risk.

How are your eyes doing now? I thought about Lasik too, but after some research, I decided I won't do it unless if its by the most top eye Lasik eye surgeon here, but he charges close to USD6000 for both eyes There are other relatively good surgeons that cost less, but I really don't want to take the risk so I don't see myself doing it in the near future although I do consider myself an good Lasik candidate since I can't wear contact lenes as they make my eyes red and very uncomfortable.

There are risks involved with absolutely ANY surgery!! My dad ended up being completely fine, just one night of discomfort!! Don't let horror stories scare you, most are very rare! GOODLUCK!!!! I hope it goes well!!!
