Lightbulb Medical Family History?

Anyone have specific conditions that run down either sides of your family?
OR any traits, as in having twins runs down the family?

--------

If I have anything wrong with me, I usually tell my mom "your genes, your fault" as a joke.

Dad's side:
-Heart. My Grandpa, Great Grandma died from strokes and my cousin had a hole in his heart when he was born. There's probably more, but these are my immediate family that I know.

-Psychological: Dad has depression, his sister has Schizophrenia and my sister has bipolar disorder.

-Eczema: Anyone can get this, but eczema is only apparent on his side of the family. Me and my cousins have it.

Mom's side:
-Allergies: Thanks mom and the Old Lady (Grandma)... I love sneezing often, it's amazing. Not.

-Eye sight: Everyone in my family wears glasses minus me - and every mom's brother/sister wears them too. I like how my Grandma told my mom when she was younger to eat lots of carrots to better their eyesight, my mom said "look at me now" while adjusting her Harry Potter glasses. Bah ha.

That's all I can think of for now.

Re: Medical Family History?

OOOhh fun thread!! LOL

Diabetes: Every uncle and aunt on my fathers side has it one of my father's contributing factors to dying, everyone on my mother's side (aunts and uncles) except my mother. I am high risk of that

Heart disease: (paternal) Uncle had triple bypass, one aunt died of heart attack.

Renal Issues: Father died of renal failure.

Breast Cancer: 2 sisters have it (paternal), aunt died of it

Brain Cancer: grandmother(paternal) committed suicide cause she found out she had it which leads to....

Mental disorders: 2 drug addict brother, 2 or 3 clinically depressed sisters, I suffer from depression.

My mother's side is pretty good with the exception of diabetes, father's side is a health disaster, lol

Re: Medical Family History?

Talking about allergies, my brother, cousin and I have sinus, pretty severe too sometimes. Its been going on since we were small kids so probably for some 12 over years or so now. Its funny how my parents and my cousin's parents don't suffer from sinus at all though.

Re: Medical Family History?

Heart disease - Paternal grandfather died in his early forties, Maternal grandmother had a quadruple bypass, and both of my parents have high blood pressure as well as cholesterol.

Heart defect - Patent Ductus Areteriosus both my son and my brother were born with this. It's the hole in the heart that you often hear of newborns having.

Auto immune disorders - Grave's disease (both Grandmas) , Hashimotos thyroiditis (my Mother), Fibromyalgia (Maternal aunt), Multiple Sclerosis (other Maternal aunt), Ulcerative colitis (Mom).

Stomach problems - Irritible bowel syndrome (all of the women on my Moms side of the family and my Maternal grandfather)

Psychological - Depression and/or Anxiety (the majority of my Moms side of the family)

Vision - Nearsighted (my Dad, my youngest Brother, and myself) I think my Mom is nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other. My Dad has glaucoma and my eye pressures occasionally run high.

Allergies - My parents, brothers, and myself. I think my youngest little girl will be plagued as well. I had to take allergy shots two in each arm for quite awhile since I was allergic to a ton of things.

Diabetes - My Maternal grandfather, and one of my Maternal uncles. The uncle is insulin dependent and had been since he was very young but my grandfather only had problems later in life. (His favorite carbs were dougnuts and wild turkey so this is no surprise)

Malignant hyperthermia - this is a rare and possible life threatening one caused by anaesthetics. One maternal uncle, my Mom, and they think I might have this based on what my reaction during my last surgery.

This is mostly my maternal side of the family b/c I know very little since my paternal grandfather died when my dad was young and my Paternal grandmother died when I was five. (She broke her leg and she told her dr something else was wrong in her leg and he refused to listen. It was a blood clot that later made it's way to her lungs.) I'm sure that there is more but I really don't want to know about it at this point in time.

Re: Medical Family History?

My Dad died from prostate cancer... So I get a PSA test every year...

Ohh yeah... And on my Mom's side... All the women had small breasts.. A trait I seem to have inhearted too!! Lol

Most of my relatives lived into their 80's or 90's except for the few who died of environmental problems.. Like smoking...

Re: Medical Family History?

Hmm, well on my dad's side:
-breast cancer(aunt)
-heart disease: My grandpa died from a heart attack. When i was 10 years old my dad died of a massive heart attack, I had seen it all take place
as well as, my other aunt who now has a pacemaker
I have also been having problems with my own heart. Its always racing, hard, and i am only 18. I had a series of tests done to figure out why, and they didn't see nothing. Which, really makes me mad cause I know this is not right and I do have the family history to back it up. I was even set up to an ekg machine for 24 hours

My moms side:
-diabetes: My grandma, and my cousins (different types)
-and i also believe parkinsons

Re: Medical Family History?

On my mom's side:

*every one of my aunts (4) and my mom and now me have been hit hard with depression. her mom even had it and dealt with it for years
*Diabetes runs strong due to my grandfather who is still in denial
*Breast cancer: a great aunt has died from it, my aunt has had one breast removed and now is in talks about removing the other one as well, my mom had a lump found 2 years ago but luckily it was just something small but its a sign of how she need to be aware of it, my other aunt was lucky as well and had whatever she got removed immediatley
*I have an uncle who still lives at home who has schizophrenia
*high blood pressure, high cholesterol

Dad's side:
*out of 9 kids and 2 parents, all but 2 or 3 are diagnosed with diabetes. yes its that bad

My grandfather can't even walk anymore due to it and my dad got an infection on his foot and got his toe cut off about a month and a half ago.

Re: Medical Family History?

Hmmm, tough thread

Dad's side:
He has osteoporosis & arthritis in his back, both of his brothers had back surgery multiple times
His mother had a couple of bouts with cancer & horrible diabetes
One brother had 3 heart attacks and 4 bouts of congestive heart failure (Lassiters are made tough!)
High blood pressure for just about all of em
His oldest sister was a complete pillhead, it eventually killed her

Mother's side:
My grandmother, mother, and myself all have depression
Her sister died of colon cancer
Mom had pre-cancerous polyps in her colon
I had pre-cancerous cells in my cervix
Grandmother and mother have diabetes

Apparently I got a Factor V (Leiden) mutation from somewhere in this mess, which I passed down to my daughter. Sucks because that is the reason she had a stroke.

Re: Medical Family History?

cancer: my brother had leukaemia (recovered), my paternal grandmother had pancreatic cancer (died from it)

Oh, and hallux valgus and varicose veins run in my entire maternal side of the family. Both the males and females pretty much have it all, most of them had surgery for both, often multiple times. So I´ll have pretty ugly feet and legs in the not so far away future lol

So overall, I think I have pretty decent genes.

Re: Medical Family History?

There are a lot of mental health issues on my father's side of the family. Both of his sisters have suffered from depression and so has his aunt. Another two family members have made suicide attempts and one was sectioned. My mother tries to make light of it by joking that his whole family are crazy but when I think of it, it's actually quite sinister. It all sounds awful but I really don't know much about most of these people. We're not a close family.

I hear twins run in my mother's side of the family.

Re: Medical Family History?

My mother has high blood pressure. I think that's about it. There's nothing wrong with me or my family. Whenever I walk into a doctor's office for a physical all the questions are always n/a, n/a, n/a.... lol

Re: Medical Family History?

bump !

From dad's side :

-teeth, minor stuff easily repaired by a few years with braces.

-eyesight, myopia, directly from my dad.

-diabetes, from my grandma, type 2 i think.

-heart, from my grandpa, he has a battery.

Mom's side :
the visible stuff !!

allergies of all kinds, we could organize a family reunion at the doc.

-eczema from my mom, my brother inherited a large part of it. i also have some.

-asthma, uncle and me.

-pollen allergy, my specialty.

-cancer, my grandma died of intestine cancer, and my grandaunt had a breast cancer when she was younger.

-food allergies : lactose for mom, and gluten for me.

that's it, no mental issue here, at least none we know of.
