Anyone own or know anything about DSLR cameras?
I've been searching around CNET and other sites for the last two weeks trying to find a suitable digital SLR camera, and I think I've narrowed down my choices to either a Nikon D40 or a Canon EOS Rebel XTi.
I was wondering if y'all had any suggestions or opinions about the two cameras I'm looking at. I've never had any kind of SLR, so I'm clueless as to what's good and what's not. I definitely can't spend more than $600. And I'm pretty certain I don't want a Sony, only because I've heard Sony requires their own special memory cards. So if you've got any info for me, bring it on! TIA! |

Re: Anyone own or know anything about DSLR cameras?
Hi!
Like you, I want a great all-round DSLR without spending the Earth. I looked at either the Canon or Nikon range. Sony do make good stuff, and their devices need memory sticks. Like all this solid-state memory, prices are falling, so it isn't a major problem these days. If you are looking for a camera with fixed (ie non-swappable) lens, Fuji make some really good ones. I have an old Fuji 6800Z that takes great snaps, and its never let me down, so their up-market range should be good too. HTH |

Re: Anyone own or know anything about DSLR cameras?
We have the Canon EOS Rebel Xlti I think that's the model number, Whitney.. Its the 7 megapixel model not the 10.. Bought it for the son for Christmas... As a package deal with the standard lense.. 55-350 zoom, case the works.. At 5am on black Friday at Best Buy for $750... He just loves it.. And it doesn't come with memory so we bought an 8 gig card and a good model specific how to book.. Ohhh... And a tripod.. Lol
We've owned a couple canon SLR in the past and they are top notch!! In my humble opinion..

Re: Anyone own or know anything about DSLR cameras?
I really really want one of these. We have a film SLR camera and love it. It's been perfect for years but we should really upgrade it to digital one of these days because it hasn't been used much recently because of the regular digital that's also too old.
I haven't owned a digital but I'd say that you can't go wrong. I love my SLR! |

Shaundra will probably be able to offer lots of good advice!
I have a Canon Rebel XTi. I haven't tried the D40, so I can't compare. If you get the Rebel, I would suggest passing on the kit lens, and get the body only and a different lens.

Actually, the Cannon and Nikon you listed are both great options for what you're looking for! I would recommend going to a store to check them out to see which is easier for you to navigate personally.

Re: Anyone own or know anything about DSLR cameras?
Great info. so far!
I think I might make a special trip to the Wolf Camera store in Memphis and play around with a few. I just always hate trying stuff out in-store. The little sales people always hover over me. :/ |

Re: Anyone own or know anything about DSLR cameras?
I have a D70 and love it! I wanted a simplier camera and would have bought the D60 ( not sure of the model #) when it came out, but I could get the D70 for the same price, so I went for it! The D70 is larger than the D40, but you can use all of the older lenses. As I understand it, the D40's use a lens with with the zoom motor in it, the older models use a larger body with the motor in the body.
