Have you ever had a bear 'knock' at your door? *Pic included*

I spent time at the lake for the past several days. My neighbour has a labrador (dog) named Ebony. Usually every morning around 8am, Ebony scratches or claws at the door to see me and I give her a treat.

My neighbours came out yesterday morning and at the usual time I heard noise, scratching sounds by the door. I was half asleep and when I opened the inside door it wasn't Ebony, it was a bear! A full grown black bear! eek!

I thought omg! So I quietly closed the inside door and locked it. Not that it would help because if it really wanted to it could break down that door. Black bears usually don't attack and would rather run but you never know.

There is another door I could have gone out but it wouldn't have helped much because I would still have to pass by the bear to get to the car.

So I took some pots and pans and started banging them in the cabin, yelling get out of here bear. It took off running.

I am careful as in not leaving garbage in the cabin, take it daily to the bear proof garbage bins, clean up dishes or anything that might be attractive to bears.

I guess it was coming by to say hi. I warned my neighbour to be on the lookout for a bear going door to door.

I just hope people weren't feeding this bear otherwise it will become use to people and could pose a danger to itself and others.

I stopped in at the conservation office on the way home and let them know. They said there have been a few problems with a bear and they plan on setting a bear trap. Once they catch it, they will release it further away.

Anyways here is a pic of the bear. It ran into the forest/bush not too far from the cabin. You can see it peering out from behind a tree. No I didn't go outside to take the photo, I took it inside from one of the bedroom windows.

Never had anything like that happen. How neat, yet freaky!

I was pretty freaked out seeing a bear that early in the morning.

Ha ha! It does remind me of big foot. The bear almost looks stalkerish in creepy way.

Thanks for sharing your story Shelley.

When I was a kid, maybe 10, I was up near Wawa, Ontario. Our family heard stories about the bears going to the dumpsite, to find food.

So we drove up to the dump and there were several cars watching 5 or 6 bears rooting around. The bears even approacked the vehicles but everyone had their windows up.

It's quite exciting to see bears up close, in their natural environment (dump? lol) - as long as they are unable to get at you!

They use to have a dump not far from our lake and it was an ideal spot for bear watching. They moved it several miles down the road and I haven't been there for awhile. They are neat creatures to watch from a safe distance.

I waited until the bear was long gone before packing up and going outside. I've been going to this lake for years but this is the first time I was really creeped out by bear.

I recall several years ago at another lake about a half hour away, a bear confronted a five year old boy and his three year old sister on their dock They both had life jackets on and jumped into the lake. The bear jumped in after them and the boy was brave enough to growl and scream at the bear to keep it at bay. He grabbed his sister, helped her to shore, ran into the cabin and their mother called the RCMP. The bear was actually walking around the cabin, looking in the patio doors, stalking them etc. The RCMP came out and had to shoot it. They figured this bear had some sort of problem, and turning into a man eater. They say it does happen time to time.
