On average, couples spend about $27,000 for a wedding. Yikes! We’re not even including the honeymoon or engagement ring into the figure. For someone in school, forking over that much money is pretty much an impossibility. However, your big day doesn’t have to be that expensive. Here’s a list of 12 ways you can have a wedding on the cheap.

1. Have the ceremony and reception at someone’s house. Renting a reception hall is expensive, and often churches charge a hefty fee for using it for weddings. Why not save some money by having your wedding at yours or someone else’s house? I’ve been to a few weddings where people have done this, and it’s been great. They just set up some chairs in the backyard that has lots of pretty flowers everywhere. Not only do you save money on the location, you save money on flowers.

2. Keep it small. Do you really need to invite 500 people to your wedding? By keeping the guest list to family and close friends you save on the amount of food you have to buy for the wedding. But besides saving money, you keep your wedding intimate. My wife and I had a small wedding. I think we had 75 guests, just family and a few close friends. What I liked most about it was I was actually able to talk to everyone at my wedding.

3. Hire a friend or student to do your photos. Wedding photos can cost a fortune. If you have a friend who does photography as a hobby or if you know a student who’s studying photography, hire them instead of a professional to take the photos. My wife and I had one lady who does photography as a hobby take our engagement photos and some of the pictures at the wedding. She did a great job and she didn’t charge that much either.

4. Buy your wedding rings on the internet. You can save some big bucks if you buy your rings on the net. My wife and I bought our rings on the internet and got a really great deal on them. We saw the same ring at a jewelry store for almost double the price.

5. Have wedding pie instead of wedding cake. Wedding cake is overrated. Plus, I have a theory that kno one really likes wedding cake, but everyone loves pie! My wife and I did this for our wedding and everyone loved it. Instead of having one huge expensive cake, we had several different pies.

6. If you have to have a cake, keep it small. Don’t go overboard on the cake. Honestly, no one remembers what wedding cakes look like. Why spend a ton of money on it?

7. Rent your wedding outfits. Rent your wedding dress. You only wear it once in your life. Dudes, just rent your tux.

8. Ladies, have someone make your dress. Ladies, if you want to keep your dress, instead of buying one at a fancy wedding botique, have somone make it for you. My mother-in-law made my wife’s dress and it turned out great. The only cost was material.

9. Don’t use tuxedos. Instead of a tux, I got hitched in a suit. I bought a new one for the wedding, but the investment was worth it because I’ve been able to wear it since then. Have everyone in your wedding party just wear a suit and you save a ton of money on rentals.

10. Make your own invitations. One friend of ours did this and the invitations were pretty cute. I’m sure she saved a ton of money by doing this. Computers now a days have some awesome publishing software. Take advantage of it.

11. Make your own DJ. DJ’s are expensive and annoying. I don’t need someone to tell me to raise my hands in the air or do the chicken dance. Here’s how to make your own DJ. First, make a huge playlist of music on winamp, iTunes, or Windows Media. Borrow someone’s stereo and speakers. Plug your laptop into the stereo, push play on your playlist, and whola! Instant DJ.

12. Ditch the alcohol. Booze at weddings can really raise prices. You can save a ton by not serving it. If you decide to have alcohol, don’t do the full bar service. Instead, buy your own wine and champagne and serve it yourself.

Re: 12 Ways To Save Money On Your Wedding

quite a lot of those would add a LOT of extra stress I think.. like they seem good at first, but when you think about it, while you're minusing money, you're adding time and stress - especially things like making invitations.

I definately would NEVER EVER have a friend do my photography, I think it's extremely important to get a good photographer, although good doesn't have to mean expensive. I want beautiful professional looking photos of my big day (If I ever have one, LOL)

Definately agree on the numbers, I can't imagine having more than 40 people at my wedding, and that's including extended family that probably wont come as they live overseas.

Honestly, I've found in the past when planning events that sometimes it's just best to shop around, find good people and leave it in their capable hands. THe more you can delegate, the more you'll enjoy your day and the more you can relax.

I really enjoyed reading the article though, and I definately will find ways to save money when and if I get married

Re: 12 Ways To Save Money On Your Wedding

I'm sorry- but only three of those things i would do. 6 / 8 / 10, maybe 9 depending on the wedding- if it was a garden or day or beach.. then nice suits are totally appropriate... Other than that- A FRIEND TAKE MY PHOTOS?!? shouldnt my friend be my guest? also, of the most amount of money we spent- outside of the reception- we spent on the photographer. I am so glad about that, since my own memory is so blurry (weddings are such a whirlwind) and I have these gorgeous pics to look at forever.

BTW- having your dress made is not necessarily cheaper- i had my dress made, yes, but in the Philippines. My friend went to have a very simple dress made, and they quoted her $900- for a simple silk bias cut slip dress. She bought one at Saks for $250 instead. And if she wanted to go cheaper, she could have gotten a satin version anywhere for under $100. Getting a dress at Michael's is cheaper. and unless you want to put that type of pressure on a family member to make your dress... hmmm, no

Here are my tips:
get a dress online. go to all the boutiques and what not, and when you find the dress you like, look for it online.. cheaper. or a similiar style. that's what one of my friend Audra did. Or shop around at regular stores for White formals / evening dresses. Once you put "wedding" in front of anything, it's automatically more expensive.

have a bouquet & centerpiece making party the night before. This is what my friend Heather did. After rehearsal dinner, we all went back to her place and wrapped flowers bought at Costco, and set up centerpieces. It was fun, and they looked gorgeous, and it was SUPER easy. after we just through them in coolers and the refrigerator.

Instead of no booze, how about wine with dinner and a no-host bar (a cash bar) for everything else?

I'm a Filipina, so this is TOTALLY appropriate in my family- but it was cute and fun, and best when you are all drunk, but instead of a DJ, my cousin and his new wife got a karaoke machine.

Here in California, the cheapest way to get married is at a small local winery. Ceremony, reception, and discount on your wine. Plus a winery is basically a house... with a way better view, and you don't have to put your friend out by having to clean the next day. Second cheap option, but SUPER cool, are mini art studios / galleries. Big space, interesting art, always great lighting. there are a ton of struggling art studios who are willing to rent space for the added cash.

and if you REALLY want to save money- get married on a Friday or a Sunday- reception halls are almost always 25-50% cheaper.

also- just think outside the box. We got married in Tahoe, so instead of buying expensive thank you notes, we got a SCREAMING deal on postcards with a picture of our reception area at a local souvenir shop. I think we got them for less than $.10 each, and everyone loved it. Plus we saved on postage because postcards are cheaper.

We got married in a gazebo overlooking the local McDonald's and then we took my stepchildren and two friends to dinner afterwards (NOT at McDonalds's, LOL) Our wedding cost us a whopping total of $100!

Re: 12 Ways To Save Money On Your Wedding

I like the article. Unfortunately i think too many people get hung up on how extravagant the whole affair is and it so stresses everyone out. I think sometimes its all about someone trying to impress someone else with how big a wedding they have.

I have seen both the over the top wedding where there is just too much food for anyone to consume to the wedding in the church hall where i know my wife and i got invited because they knew i owned a camera! The amount of money spent did not make for a good wedding or marriage.
