In the Haulin forum, I posted about our new house. The decorating is pretty... as in, pretty ugly. At any rate, I need advice on colors.
The kitchen is currently burnt orange, including the ceilings. Yes, including the ceilings. The kitchen cabinets are between a cherry and a pecan, the countertops are black granite and the appliances are brushed stainless steel. There's a hand-carved hickory kitchen bar top and under that there's corrugated aluminum (I have no idea what they were thinking). There is a lot of light but, obviously it looks really dark. It's kind of an open floor plan but hand carved hickory molding separates the kitchen from the living room. As you walk out of the kitchen (no door, just open), the first fireplace of the house is between the kitchen and the open living room. They painted the brick white and it goes from the floor to the ceiling-- it's the kind of fireplace where you can see the back from the kitchen. The ceilings are quite high.
Here's my dilemma: I need to figure out what color to paint the kitchen (I'm starting with the worst, first.) My decor is rustic, primitive Americana. My colors are navy blue, barn red, mustard yellow and buttermillk. (You can see pictures of my house-- not the new one-- in my notepad to get an idea of what I'm talking about.) I'm not sure what color to paint that will coordinate with everything-- the black granite countertop is hanging me up!
I'd love to hear suggestions and, if you have any pictures of examples, feel free to post them or point me to them! I'm STUCK!
Thanks in advance!
Hugs,
Brandi
Ok y'all... I know some have read this.. I need HELP!
I am thinking of mustard yellow (more brown-yellow, not bright yellow).
Any ideas?
Warmly,
Brandi

Hey there I've been so busy lately and have hardly had any time to chat here! I would LOVE to have your input. I'll pm you unless you want to do it here-- just let me know!

Ok, here's a pic of the kitchen-- I have some of my stuff sitting on the counters but it's not decorated, at all! The first pic is one side of the kitchen and the second pic is the right side, to the right of the sink and with the dishwasher. The third picture picks up where the second one left off and shows the window. I didn't take a picture of the hickory slab kitchen bar because my son and husband had their drinks piled on it (they were working there today) and I was too lazy to clean it off...ha!
The walls and ceiling are burnt orange (UGH!) I think he was trying to pick up on the vein of coloring in the black granite and he went terribly awry!
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!
Hugs,
Brandi

I would go off of that tile backsplash, and pick a color that is in there. The walls want to be more neutral, but you knew that The ceiling wants to be white, like the trim.
What's happening is the colors are all over the place and everything is competing to be the superstar. I would not do any greys or blues or anything cool on the walls. A warmer beige I think would be best. Then the ctops can stand out.
It's hard to tell from the pics, is there crown molding on the cabs?
I'm glad you said that Uggh further down because i saw the pictures, nice cabinets btw but that wall color was like yeeech! I would go with some dark tan color.
Here i took the liberty of downloading the second picture and photoshopping with my suggestion.

There is crown molding on the cabinets. And I was leaning towards a beige/taupe/yellow color.
Also, Darla, thanks for doing that! Is it my laptop or is that color like a mustardy yellow (brownish yellow)? I was thinking that mustardy yellow color. What do y'all think about that?
I normally never seek advice for colors, etc. But this house is going to be the biggest decorating challenge for me. I am rustic, rough, Americana-- this is sleek, modern and sophisticated.... sooooooooooooooooooooooooo not me!!
Hugs,
Brandi
