Cake decorating.
Well actually I'm thinking of starting with cupcakes. I don't plan on doing this professionally, but I need a hobby that I can do with the girls and I thought this would be fun.
I have a few Wilton tips, but I can always raid my mother-in-law's stash since she never uses them. Does anyone have any tips or pointers?

Re: Cake decorating.
My mother in-law used to do this. I have started to get into the cake decorating thing. I actually just picked up Wiltons 2007 Cup Cake book. I already mad a few, though they didn't need any real decorating. I made Carrot and Tiramisu Cup Cakes. I even made each of their icings....Cream Cheese icing for the Carrot Cake and Marscapone icing for the tiramisu. YUMMY!!!! Then i shaved some some chocolate on top of the Tiramisu icing.
I really want to start learning how to do those fancy cake decorations

Re: Cake decorating.
Tiramisu cupcakes? I would be in hog heaven!!!!!
I looked into taking a class, but I don't feel like shelling out the money for a hobby, plus we're going to eat them whether they're perfect or not.
Now I'm craving tiramisu.

Re: Cake decorating.
Thank you sweetie, I'd love that!
Ever since last week when someone posted a site with tons of cute cupcakes on it I've been crazy thinking about how much fun it will be to bake with the girls. Once the semester has ended that is.

Re: Cake decorating.
This is Ashlee's mom. If you want some good tips on decorating cakes, cupcakes, etc. go to Wilton.com. Under their menu they have a decorating techniques link. I have learned alot from their site, plus I just experiment on my own. Wilton also has a discussion forum where you can get questions answered. Here is a pic of a cake I have made.

Re: Cake decorating.
You ladies are welcome. Another tip....the tweety bird cake was done primarily with a Wilton star tip. Stars are the easiest tip to cover a cake with and make it look nice. I am just a mom that likes to make cute cakes. I have had no training at all. That was actually the first cake I ever decorated.

Re: Cake decorating.
Wilton has some excellent step by step instructional books and DVD's. My mother and I used to do it for extra cash and the most important trick my Ma taught me was to bake the cake a day before, cut it with string to level it, then pop in the freezer. Wait to ice the cake until it is completely frozen, this will contribute to a smooth silky exterior without breaking it or getting cake mushed up in it. The decorating part just takes practice. Make your roses and leafing ahead of time and put on wax paper, it will give you a chance to practice them before commiting them to the cake.

Re: Cake decorating.
I agree that cake decorating is fun. I thought of another tip. When practicing with the different tips use wax or parchment paper. You can practice your stars, leaves, writing, etc. Best of all you don't mess up the cake and you can scrape the icing off the paper and mix it back into the rest.

Re: Cake decorating.
Well, if you all want another addictive site, sign up for cakecentral.com. You will learn so much about cake baking and decorating. I don't visit like I used to, that was before I found this site. Members will post their latest pictures. That site is fantastic for both beginner and professional.
