Back to the eighties (what?!)

well everyone...
I thought for most of my childhood and early adolescence that I simply hated clothes, I was an oddball type of female. Not into shopping or fashion or other girly-stuff.
I was wrong, i just didn't like 80's style! When it comes to trends inspired by an era I am more a 60's or 70's knock-off type of girl.
I have had to spend a lot of this season's shopping combing through a lot of stuff/styles I thought died a natural death long beofre I even turned 15 years old.
No matter how much cash I have on hand for clothes shopping I wind up having to sift through tops in hideous flourescent colors, bottoms with ruffles in all the wrong places that make my figure look fat instead of flattered! horizontal stripes, veryical stripes that are brown and white instead of black and white. huge polka dots.
I can't hate on every type of 80's clothes there are some that I was happy to see come back this summer. Well namely, tube tops...it was nice to stay cool in a tube top. I may even consider buying a drop waist blouse or shirt if it can manage to hide my tummy this fall.
Is anyone else here irritated by the new proliferation of high waisted jeans, leggings and (omg) legwarmers popping up in fashion mags and being sold for outrageous prices?
I for one am not gonna spend $300 to look like I got all new clothing from a secondhand store...when secondhand stores actually have the real deal and still in good shape.
I am not bagging on secondhand stores, I love them and I got a pair of Doc Martin sandals from a place like that in good condition. It just seems pointless to open up a new catalog from vicoria's scret or another place..and wind up seeing the skinny pants, bolero jackets and vests we all wore in middle school. Ecch!
I saw a woman at a concert I went to wearing a pinstripe vest, black leggings, and a white pirate shirt with a black Blossom-style hat...need I even mention her wide belt complete with silver chains across it? I couldn't decide if she was fashion forward or totally backwards...a woman who was all of twenty years old wearing clothes that would have gotten her laughed out of a given room only 5 or 10 years ago!
I am looking forward to the messy hair and flannel jackets and suede coming back into style if fashion truly comes around full circle. The 90's were allright but i don't like the 80's for fashion at all. too man of the styles made or inspired by that era strike me as straight up tacky or simply unflattering. OMG, nail biting anticipation at wondering who will be the first to wind up sporting the first bolo tie I see.
bright blue eyeshadows? come on! chunky earrings? overwhelming and gaudy on any face or hairstyle!
So give me an amen if you are so not jumping on the 80's bandwagon! What the crap is goin' on?
hugs
mela

Re: back to the eighties (what?!)

honey, i am right there with you.
i was in high school in the 80's (i know i am dating myself here)
i hated it then, i hate it now. i wore it then because that was all there WAS, but there is no way i am wearing that same stuff this time around.
i did my time with the mall bangs, when the motto was "the bigger the hair, the closer to God". if i see those again, i am going into hiding

Re: back to the eighties (what?!)

I HATED the 80's style!! Blech!! The thought of denim vests, huge permed hair and high-rise jeans makes me feel nauseous! LOL I cannot STAND for my jeans to be anywhere near my belly button, but now the rise is getting higher and higher and I hate that. Oh, and when did the skinny jeans with the zipper on the side become cool again? I think the 80's was kind of a tacky style, and I definately don't want to see it come back again. But that's just me..

Re: Back to the eighties (what?!)

Fashion in the eighties can be summed up as "big and bold". Saying that, I've never cared for it either..huge jewerly, mile-high hair, just name it.

Supposedly fashion always recycles every twenty years, so seven years or so from now, the nineties' look will be in.

As long as shoulder pads don't make a comeback, those things were scary!

Re: Back to the eighties (what?!)

But then again things from the 80s were taken from other eras too, my mum laughs about it all because she sees me in things she used to own, and remembers her mum saying the same thing when she first bought things. I like alot of 80s things, skinny jeans, dress shirts, stripy tops, polka dot tops, even leggings with the right thing and I LOVE beads, I think they make an outfit look so different. But I'm hoping shoulder pads and high waisted trousers never come back in !!

Re: Back to the eighties (what?!)

A lot of fashion is inspired by the past... And sort of like reinvented or brought back.
K, I wasn't even born yet when it was the 80's but I know how it was and the style. (Watch a lot of older films)

I'm okay with one or two pieces of something 80's inspired, but it's like a fashion flashback when a person wears something entirely 80's head-to-toe.
I know many of the young crowd and a some people I know personally are styling past trends, and 80's rock fashion.

Re: Back to the eighties (what?!)

I like the styles - on most girls they are sooo cute. I hate when they over do them though, you know what I mean. But some of them - I could do without.

I can't wait for jellies to come back HAHA!
