January Wedding...Any Ideas?

Hello, all!

A guy friend of my brother's (whom I've known since he was 9 and I was 11) has just gotten engaged! They're getting married early January. I know it's not for awhile, but I'm excited!

It's going to be a full-on black tie affair; adults only. They're going for a rich old hollywood glamour look.

I don't know what to wear! I have a few killer little black dresses, but I feel kind of awkward wearing black to a wedding. Also, I really want a floor length dress! I don't have any, but I think it would be really fun to wear!

Unfortunately, the only long dresses I can find either scream "prom" or "bridesmaid", which is not a look I'm wanting to go for. I'm thinking something more along the lines of these:

Of course, I wouldn't wear anything resembling white. lol. Do you think these are too over the top? I know the groom was adamant on how formal he wanted the wedding to be...

Does anyone know where to get a good floor length dress? Or should I just go with one of my LBDs?

Re: January Wedding...Any Ideas?

Hm..I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing black to a night wedding.

I do think a long dress will be great, but the embellishments on the first two a bit too over the top.

Do you think they're going for the formal black-tie or ultra-formal white tie event? I think you might be able to pull of the dresses if it was a white tie event.

Re: January Wedding...Any Ideas?

I agree with Ashley, i think its ok to wear black to a wedding, i see no problem with that, i have seen a lot of women wear black to weddings.
Are they floor lenght as well?
I think something like what Rachel is wearing there would be nice, except in a different color, cause you know what they say about no one else wearing a white dress except for the bride lol.

Lol. Right...I said I wouldn't wear anything resembling white.

I don't own any floor length dresses...all of my black dresses are LBDs. lol.

I guess you girls are right, the first two are a bit too fancy for black tie. I was just getting a little too excited! lol!

I want an excuse to get super dressed up! lol.

Re: January Wedding...Any Ideas?

Shaundra, the dresses you chose are SO gorgeous, I love them! I think if you do wear black it would be fine, but maybe wear a coloured wrap or sash?

as for those styles, not sure where you could get them from, but I think you'd look hot in them!

congrats to your friend on his engagement!!

Ohhh, weddings are so exciting!

Hey Shaundra

I would totally try looking for a BCBG Max Azria or ABS dress.

I LOVE Max Azria and they have some gorgeous long formal gowns that are def not prom-ish.

HTH!

BCBG is almost always my store of choice for interesting, adult, appropriate dresses.
Plus, in spring, the SF Union Square BCBG basement has the greatest sales ever.

Re: January Wedding...Any Ideas?

black is OK to any wedding. to me, it is the texture that makes the difference. for instance... one shouldn't wear black sequence to a day wedding, nor would one wear a black knitted sweater dress to a summer wedding. BLACK IS OK.

Although I love the dresses, I think they are kind of too fancy. You are a guest and not part of the bridal party (I assume). Get a feel of what the bridal party and bride are wearing. Then dress a little "under". Also, the invitation/location dictates the attire as well.

Re: January Wedding...Any Ideas?

I checked out the BCBG website - omg, the evening dresses there are gorgeous - but that's steep money to me, ha.

Re: January Wedding...Any Ideas?

There's a BCBG outlet a little over an hour from where I live that has a lot of dresses, so maybe sometime between now and the wedding I could check that out! They usually have pretty good prices.

I know that technically black is ok, but I'm just not 100 percent comfortable with it, personally.
