Shortening My Skirt?

I have this denim skirt and it's too long. I was thinking of cutting it to make it shorter... but do you think it would fray and is there anyway of preventing it from doing so? I was thinking about sewing up the edge, like hemming it, but I don't own a sewing machine and my manual sewing skills aren't that great

Re: Shortening My Skirt?

Denim will definitely fray. Hemming it, would be an ideal solution. Maybe you could take it somewhere to have it hemmed?

Re: Shortening My Skirt?

there is one solution for hemming denim if you don't have a sewing machine, and need to hand sew. You can hand-sew a "binding" onto the edge of the denim. Most fabric stores sell something called "bias binding" (you can usually find this in packages by the zippers section of a fabric store). A "binding" is a separate piece of material that is folded in half and stitched in place to conceal a raw edge. The drawback is that is will definitely alter the appearance of the skirt (it is a separate piece of fabric and will never match the skirt color, unless you happen to luck out). But, it is fairly simple to hand-sew it. You could also try a product called "fray check" which is a liquid sealant that prevents fraying (I used it once and the smell is so noxious it gave me a nosebleed, so I suggest using it outside).

Re: Shortening My Skirt?

you can also get hemming tape.......... you just fold the fabric, put the tape between the pieces and iron it!!!!!!!!!! it's a miracle for those who don't sew!!! I'm not exactly sure what the exact name is but it is readily available at walmart and sewing stores ..... if you ask they know what it is!!
