Here's another story on this girl. The news stories said she's blind, can't swallow, and can't talk.
RUSKIN - The local community has rallied behind a Hillsborough County teenager brutally attacked outside of a library.
The 18-year-old woman was returning books to the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library when she was severely beaten and raped in April.
The attack left her blind and unable to walk or talk, and she will probably need care for the rest of her life.
Her friends organized a fundraiser at the Ruskin VFW. Hundreds of people turned out to support the young woman and her family.
"It's all going to a trust fund that's set up right now to help with medical expenses," said organizer Melanie Morrison. "From what we've heard, the mother is by her side and has had to quit her job."
The young woman was a senior at East Bay High School at the time of the attack. Her friends Crystal Zipperer and Kristen Zemina are going off to college at the University of Florida this weekend. The plan was for all of the girls to begin the new adventure together.
"In the beginning, we were expecting her, in time, to be better to go with us. We weren't prepared to hear that she wouldn't be," said Zipperer.
Before leaving for college, Zemina plans to visit her friend again. Zemina is trying to stay positive.
"She's getting better. It's slow. It's not fast enough for any of us I don't think, but she is getting better so I'm hopeful," she said.
Anyone who wants to help can go to any SunTrust bank and make a deposit to the "Bloomingdale Attack Victim Fund."
