Job Search Blues

So I've been looking for another job since the one I have now isn't cutting it. I work part time, and I plan to keep it that way for a while because I want to break into film and entertainment (not acting, art department). Problem is, I'm getting about 10 hours a week when I need AT LEAST FREAKIN' 20! The company is being super stingy with hours and its making me pissed. I know its because of the economy blah blah blah but I need to pay some bills. Right now, I am breaking even. Buying underwear can set me back!

I'm applying for design assistant positions ( I have a bachelors of science in interior architecture and design). And do you know what the really sorry part about all this is? I've already been a design assistant! I'm not even getting called in for interviews and I don't know why because I am very qualified. Even film has slowed down tremendously and entertainment has been an industry that is usually untouched by economic down turns.

So I honestly don't know what to do. I don't have to make rent or anything but I'm already 23 and I want to move out. I'm not miserable at home but I want to be able to stand on my own two feet financially. I guess its pride thing. I don't feel like I'm where I should be in life and its very depressing. The worst part about not working enough is the boredom. It just gives me time to fixate on these issues. I have been looking daily but its still not enough. Can anyone give me tips to beat the blues?

Re: Job Search Blues

aww, hun, I know exactly how you feel, at 23, I'm still living at home and I'm likely to be there for a few years yet but I do really want to be able to have my own financial security etc, support myself.

You'll find something eventually! all I can say is best of luck and keep searching, something will turn up! I was in your situation a while ago, where I was getting one 3 hour shift a week, and it was just so hard searching for a new job, but I haven't regretted it for a moment.

Re: Job Search Blues

I feel your pain. I was working at corporate for a fortune500 company back last February and I got pissed off one day and just walked out... stupidest mistake ever. I ended up having to move back home (to another state) until I was able to find another job... I had been looking since Feb and I just now got one about two weeks ago if that tells ya anything. I swear there is absolutely nothing out there right now... thank goodness I got a new position with an even BIGGER company and I can't wait to start next week. It's just crazy that I had to wait seven months for something to come up.

It's ridiculous how hard it is to get a job these days.

Re: Job Search Blues

I can truly understand where you are coming from especially with that last sentence. I'm the same age in the same situation....I want to move out so bad!!!
I've been applying to jobs right and left but nothing has come up. I don't want to live with my parents forever!

Re: Job Search Blues

I really appreciate all of you sympathizing with me. Its good to know I'm not alone. I really enjoy working in film and its a true passion of mine but I just get horrible anxiety waiting around, even for a part time design assistant job. Hopefully something will turn up soon...
