My Fourth of July Weekend was horrible!
We had a very busy weekend planned. A party on the 3rd, 2 on the 4th, 2 on the 5th and one on the 6th. The parties on the 5th and 6th involved the same family and more on that later. The 4th starts out with a call from my sister. My father's college roommate from 60 years ago died as a result of a one car accident. Even though my father has been dead for 27 years we were still close to the roommate and his family. I was asked to be a pall bearer in honor of my father... so that put a damper on the weekend.
The party that we actually went to on the 5th (we RSVPed no to the other one) was a surprise birthday party for our friend Susan. The party on the 6th was a surprise baby shower/ brunch for her daughter Jen who was pregnant with twins. Just before Susan's party I found out that Jen wasn't feeling well and went to the hospital with her husband. I called her and she said she was OK, but she might not make the party. So we go to party, Susan was surprised and everything looked good with Jen. I was thinking that there was no one with Jen and her husband at the hospital while they were waiting for tests and I decided that my wife and I should go and sit with them. Jen's Aunt Joanne decided to go and we took her to the hospital. To make a long story short, we waited with them for about 3 hours while the tests were done and she was examined by the doctors. One of the twins that an extremely rapid heartbeat and they were trying to decide how to deal with it. Things were looking good, so we sent her husband home to shower and take care of the dog. In fact, by 12:20 AM things were looking so good we all were going to go home after one last exam by the doctors. We had left the room and I was going back to see if they were done so we could say good bye. As I got close to the room, a nurse burst out and was looking for us. The twin with the rapid heatbeat suddenly had none and a decision had to be made, let him die and deliver the healthy one later or have a C-section and bring both of them out so that the first could be revived. They were 31 weeks, so they would be premature, but not horribly so. Jen and her Aunt made the only decision they could and Jen had the C-section. They worked on him, but after 4 or 5 hours, they couldn't save him... We had left after Jen's husband, parents and sister arrived and found out about what happened at the shower. (They had decided that they would still have the brunch since there were a ton of out of town guests that came for the party and shower.) Fortunately the other twin is doing quite well! Put quite a damper on the weekend!!! Worst 4th of July I've ever had!!!

Oh dear! I am so sorry about your father's roommate and Jen's baby. That is so sad.
Sorry about your weekend, but I have to say it was really sweet of you and your wife to be with Jen when she was at the hospital.

Holy cats Lisa - talk about a very busy fourth of July!
As to what the ladies said, I'm sorry for the loss of your father's friend, and of the little baby. I'm quite sure that either event would be quite stressful.

That was quite a weekend. I'm sorry for the losses, but at least one giant blessing came out of it. You know that means that this twin is going to be a hard-headed, stubborn, survivor.
