Shockingly rude server
So I go to Applebee's right. I'm sitting there for about 5 minutes or so and I haven't seen my server. Well I'm super thirsty and all I want is water. So I look around and I see the bartender returning from the kitchen with a tall stack of plastic tumbler cups. Perfect I think, I'll just ask the bartender for some water.
Me: I don't know who my server is or if I have one, but I'm super thirsty could I get a drink of water?
Bartender: Well why would I do that?
Me: Uh.... Because you have a tall stack of glasses?
Bartender: That just means I'll have to go back and get more glasses.
I was left wondering if she had a dark dry humor or what. Problem was her body language, tone and facial expression did not point to any humor at all. It occurred to me this chick was serious. I didn't even order anything and left.
I came home, called and spoke with the manager who just shocked. She apologized and assured me it would b dealt with and would not happen again. I thanked her and recommend that she encourage the bartender to pursue another line of work. Turns out the manage said she has already been doing that with her and it's not how her restaurant operates.
Still, anything think calling the manager was too much? Think the bartender got fired?

Re: Shockingly rude server
sounds like they'd probably done the same to other people as well as you. I personally wouldn't have called the manager since I'm very very non confrontational and wouldn't have felt comfortable doing it, but frankly, how will management ever know if not for people like you calling?
so I think you did the right thing... very bizarre way of speaking to a customer, haha?

Re: Shockingly rude server
That is unacceptable! How do they expect to keep customers if they have an attitude like that? I'm so glad that you rang the manager, I hope that employee gets a good serving from the boss.

Re: Shockingly rude server
Its actually good that you called the manager.. you are a customer who deserves to be treated well! if that bartender has an attitude, maybe she shouldn't be in the serving business.. I would totally have called the manager! (I always do if things are not right)

Re: Shockingly rude server
Rude is rude and if you work in a public establishment they you should be courtious to the public.. I'd have called, hell I'd have tracked down the manager before I left and let her know just how unpleased I was and that I wouldn't be coming back..

Re: Shockingly rude server
Yeah she was being rude. You sounded very polite and I think you did the right thing. Probably didn't get fired because the manager knows about what she's been doing yet she's still there. About the manager not knowing if you didn't tell her, if the problem is big enough and happens often enough, odds are she knows and is keeping them around anyway.

Re: Shockingly rude server
What surprises me is that she admitted she knows her employee is not a good worker. If a manager knows people like that are bad for business why does she keep her?

Re: Shockingly rude server
Thats very rude! Eventually she will have to go get more, theres no need to go back for a whole stack when she would have only used one glass. I agree with Karren if you are in that line of work you need to be polite and respectful. Maybe the manager was giving her another chance since she said it had happened before. I would personally fire her, it makes the manager as well as the whole business look bad and unfreindly. Even more so knowing about it and doing nothing.

Re: Shockingly rude server
Ugh I hate people that hate their job and take it out on customers. If you don't want to serve people, GO HOME!
Someone else will gladly take your job and appreciate it.

Re: Shockingly rude server
I think you did the right thing by calling the manager. The bartender was rude and unprofessional. She shouldn't be working with the public. I hope the manager cracks down on her.

Re: Shockingly rude server
Thanks for all your feedback. Though I do suspect the manager ended her employment as she said she's been encouraging her to leave. Which I'm guessing is reduced and selective hours as to make the job not so lucrative. The manager scheduling her Sunday afternoons as a bartender is probably not the best shift, just a guess.
Just to echo what other said about her not wanting the job while others would be happy to have a job. I'd like to say ditto. I'm going to school since I've been unable to find work, so you can imagine this made me feel. Oh well, unappreciated will always be around. Besides I'm not too upset about, just shocked.
BTW, could you imagine dating someone like that? This is someone who could never be made content.

Re: Shockingly rude server
If the bartender did not want to inconvenience them self to give you a bit of customer service, then they should be fired immediately. They should not be given any further hours at all...just another chance to drive away another customer.

I agree. The most shocking part was when she said this all to me, she was standing directly in front of the ice bin and water with the cups in arms reach to her left.

Re: Shockingly rude server
I don't like confrontation either, but I also don't like disrespect and I love it when rude people get put in their place! I would've found the manager and complained right then and told that a paying customer is now leaving and I bet they would've comped your meal!
