I sometimes do the "wings" slightly differently, in that I actually start with the line under the lower lashes and continue it upwards, following the slant at the outer corner, to create the wing. I then line above my upper lashes, definitely joining the two together. It doesn't open the eye up so much but it gives more of an illusion of a slant.
