i hate the fact that oil companies need to maintain a $40 billion yearly profit.
i hate that Bush dosen't just take the oil in Iraq as a spoil of war. Or maybe he is, we'll never know.
it's completely depressing that our poor, even in this rich country, will suffer as badly or worse than they did in the Depression because it costs more to get to work than they make.
environmentally, it should be good, because we no longer have the option to look for alternatives, it's time to find them now.
but i know poor, and i know what it's like to put $5 gas in your car for 1.4 gallons of gas.
what are we supposed to do in rural areas where we don't have public transit? how do i strap a carseat and 2 booster seats onto a bike?
the only reason that we are letting it go so far (based on SPECULATION) is that it's not you that is struggling. it's not you that decides which to buy, food or gas.
Yet.
And yes, a bit off topic, but this war is staggeringly idiotic. A trillion dollars for what? Iraqi police and an election? 4,000+ of our people dead?
They didn't die for our freedom, they died for the people of Iraq. Is it worth it?

How out of touch for our Darling Dubya to assume that we can afford to just go spend this stimulus check on luxeries. Everybody I know is paying off debt (incured because they can't afford to live) or some people I know purchased a gas card.
He apparently has no idea, or simply doesn't care, that us families out here DO have to decide between food or gas sometimes!

9-11 happened because the terrorists hate America (the most prominent representative of Western civilization at the moment). SOLELY because they literally believe all Western civilization is evil. This will never change regardless of America's foreign policies. It's due to the extremist religious beliefs of these terrorists.

Shaundra i agreed with everything you said except for the last sentence. I have a coworker who is Muslim and has told me repeatedly that there is nothing in the Koran or in any teachings that can condone such a hideous act. What has happened is these people have perverted their religious belief to the point that they think it can somehow be justified. It cannot.

Oh, I completely agree. I know that this is not what the vast majority of Muslims believe. That's why I refered to the beliefs of the terrorists as extremist religious beliefs. I guess I wasn't specific enough. I in no way consider the beliefs of Muslim terrorists to be representative of the beliefs of the majority of Muslims.

I think it is a combination of various aspects, not just one person or group. The rise in gas prices is due to the simple economics of supply and demand. Unfotunately, we are too dependant on a non renewable resource.

if you want to point fingers at the poor economy, blame the lenders, blame the federal reserve, blame the people who bought way more house than they could afford in the hopes of flipping it for a profit. predatory loans coupled with the collapse of the real estate bubble has led to more economic trouble than the president's policies.
This is the answer that I was thinking of...
Our dollar is worth half of what it was 2 years ago...Hence we have to pay more (twice as many) dollars for foreign oil. The Fed is printing money to put into circulation in order to create more money, which is exacerbating the situation. The stimulus checks are just more money being circulated to further devalue our crappy dollar.

There is no oil shortage. That is misinformation put out to keep you in constant fear...just like CIA-al queda. The boogeyman is the secret govt that pulls the strings. National Security Agency is the fastest growing part of the govt and even Congress isn't allowed to know what they are doing.

Oh back to oil....if our war WAS a "war for oil", why are oil prices through the roof?
Next time anyone spews this crap, I want to know how Iraq got Osama Bin Laden dead for us. Oh wait. He's alive! And not even in captivity.

Further to the point:

Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan are NOT interchangeable.

To imply such a thing is ignorant at best. Next time anyone chooses to do so, I strongly suggest they try educating themselves on the dictatorship of each individual nation, and the biases each countries' terrorist organizations have -- because they DO vary. Also, research their actions and activities -- still different from one another.

One terrorist group is not equal to another. Similar in methods and motives, perhaps, but similar does not equal being the "same as" one another.

(And I do apologize for coming off strongly, but things like that absolutely disgust me-- blanket statements much?)

On to the point of gas and oil -- there are many offenders. Period. There is not one sole person to blame for this. If it were, it'd be much easier to end. Meh.

Canada's dollar has risen to the point it is on par with the US.
The cost of gasoline is rising here just as in the US; a gallon of gas is more expensive here than in the US.

When I lost my vehicle 6 years ago, I truly believed that my world had ended - I mean, how in god's name could I survive without a car.
I now purchase bus tickets instead of gas, car pool, or rent a car if I really need one.

i really don't know who to blame b/c it's not just one person. it's going to come down to people making there own fuel to use, it's already happening actually. they actually did find oil in canada to use, but can't figure out how to get to it.

Actually, we have been able to get oil from the oil sands for years - it goes through a process where the oil is separated from the sand.
Then the oil gets processed into gasoline.

My understanding is that the US gets more oil from Canada than the Middle East.

really? interesting. what is your avg. price of gas if you don't mind me asking? ours is around 4$, but is said to go up another dollar. rediculous, i know that in other places it's even more. i was watching a cop show dated about 10yrs. ago, it showed a gas sign of 1.29, people back then probably thought that was alot, i'd take that now any day.
