Re: 5 Year Old Autistic Child Voted Out of Class

what nerve on the teacher's part! to think that kids this age need this kind of lesson is idiotic.
kids don't need to know at this age what is considered disruptive, this is when they LEARN it. most 5 year olds can't even read, how on earth are they supposed to process "voting out" a peer because they don't like him?
i am absolutely seething for the boy and his parents. i don't care how draining or "hard" it is to teach kids, if you can't handle it, get the hell out of the career.
mrs. thing needs to get herself a psych eval to see if she's mentally delayed.

Re: 5 Year Old Autistic Child Voted Out of Class

While I think that what the teacher did was totally wrong and inappropriate, having a teacher in the family I do agree on some levels with Shaundra and Darla. There is not enough support in the classrooms (particularly in Oz in my experience) for teachers to handle kids like this. They frequently disrupt classes to the point where the other kids are missing out on learning because the teacher is being forced to deal with children who have learning difficulties and disabilities

While I understand the concept of mainstreaming, I don't think it should be done at the disadvantage of other children. I think that mixed lunch and recess times is the best idea as it doesn't disrupt separate learning patterns and would allow children with disabilities to work at their own pace without holding up the rest of the class.

Regardless though, I can't even begin to imagine what that must have felt like for that little boy. How awful

What was she thinking? I'm not saying she's an evil person but she made a terrible mistake.

I agree with your perspective here.
