It annoys me when people from other countries say Americans are fat or stupid or when they assume we all like country music and wear Levi's and cowboy hats. lol!
And, as far as religion...I'm a Christian, and my beliefs are very important to me. So it's frustrating when people misrepresent Christianity and Christian beliefs (as found in the Bible).
|
That's a good one, "yank" stereotype. Btw, I HATE the word yank. Just sounds offensive to my ears, probably isn't - but the way I've heard it towards me it's like... "another typical yank". Caca.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I'm white. Straight up. As far back as we can trace my family, everyone is from NC. I tend to get really irritated when most white people get lumped into the preppy, snobby, better than everyone stereotype. And for anyone who isn't preppy or snobby, they're trying to be black. Oh, and I'm from the south. So that makes me country as hell, going cow-tipping for fun, and ignorant.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I was born in Argentina (both my parents are Argentine as well) but my family and I migrated to the States when I was 2 years old. I have lived in Florida (practically) all my life. I had a Cuban nanny till I was about 12 years old, so when I speak Spanish I don't have the "tell-tale" Argentine accent and don't speak in the typical Argentine slang ("che" - "boludo" etc.) Yet, (during Spanish dialogue) when people ask me where I'm from and I reply Argentina, what do they say? "Really? That's funny you don't have the accent! CHE BOLUDO!" *which by the way, roughly translates into "hey, dumbass"*
...I kind of stare blankly for a few moments, let the uncomfortable silence speak for itself... then walk away.
Another thing that bugs me to no end is the fact that Argentines have a nasty reputation for being snobs (which, yes, to some extent this may be true but not with all of us! Especially those of us raised in the U.S.!!) And I've straight up had people say "Gosh, you're really nice. Not at all like the typical Argentine who thinks they know it all." ...uhhh.. what part of that am I supposed to take as complimentary????

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I don't get offended easily-- rarely, actually.
Now, if you start with my kidlets, I will be up in your grill in a second. Otherwise, I could care less. You think I'm fat? Fine, I'm fat. You think I'm ignorant? Fine, I'm ignorant. Whatever someone thinks is totally ok with me. You know, opinions are like noses; we all have them and they all smell.
Warmly,
Brandi

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
From a biracial girl herself, I absolutely HATE and loathe it when people group you into one category...because we're not. I know I sort of sound like Tiger Woods ("I'm NOT black" haha) but it's damn true!
I'm half asian/half white, and my friends know this, but always decide to group me into the Asian category. It's like you HAVE to be something in America, you can't be "other" or whatever you truly are. Also, a lot of models in Asia are Eurasian, but are immediately taken as the "face" of Asian girls......Eurasian \=/ Asian

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I don't myself, I used to almost cry every time race was brought up in middle school. Whether it was mine or whomevers.
Oh, once like 4 years ago, this mexican chick that I don't like (Btw, she's very pretty and she knows it, but she's such a b*tch because no one tells her anything) anyway, we had the same group of friends so we were having lunch together in HS, and there was an Asian guy eating with us. She had the nerve to ask him if his vision wasn't good because of his smaller eyes. WTF?!?!?? Why would you ask that? What an effin dumb question. Omg, I just wanted to hit her in the face for being an idiot and a b*tch and ignorant. That's when I lost all respect for her.
I myself don't really get sterotyped that much. Not that I know of anyway.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I don't think I get offended, but it get's on my nerves, when people assume I speak Spanish. I'm mexican. It wasn't spoken in my household growing up so I didn't pick it up. It sucks for me because I could really use it in my job, but other than that how do you walk up to a person and start talking to them in Spanish without knowing them!!
One time I did get offended, I'm light, my husband is even lighter than me (mex also). I had my son he was a couple of months old and some lady walked up to me and was like oh, he's so cute, i love his eyelashes. He's such a cute baby, he has to be half white!!!!!!!!! Who says stuff like that!!!!! That just blew my mind.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I heard many polish jokes, but they do not bother me at all...
what bothers me is when people say "Pollacks", it's just a derogatory term, maybe some people do not realize it.
another thing is when people speak to me like I am mentally challenged because my English is not perfect. that's probably it.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
A friend of mine said something along the lines of what La_Mari mentioned. She asked me if I think that Asian people can see properly...wtf? She knows that I'm half filipino too.
A couple years ago, there were several of us sitting at a table. Two guys were joking around/teasing, but weren't saying anything really bad at first. One of them said "Why don't you go...(don't remember)". The other replied with, "Why don't you go pick some cotton?" It got dead silent, but he stayed very calm and they eventually became friends.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
being middle eastern in the us this day and age, i have tons of my fair share of stuff.
and for some reason people think im mexican so i get all those racial comments too.
its not really offending as more annyoing since ive kinda delt with it since childhood and the people who usually say it are so stupid that its not worth getting angry at. i have more pitty for them than anything.

Re: Have You Ever Felt Offended By...
I don't get offended really at all! I do find it funny and also slightly annoying when people outside of Utah and that aren't familiar with Mormonism ask me how many wives my dad has or if my hair is hiding my horns or start bashing on my religion or saying we're a cult, etc. People think of Mormons as Amish. Yes we don't drink, smoke, drink coffee or have premarital sex (well, we're no supposed to do these things, but some still do) but other than that, we're as normal as all of the rest of the world! LOL Yes, Mormons did practice polygamy a long, long time ago and there is a religion that branched off of the Mormons (FLDS) that is not affiliated with us at all that still practices it, but we do not! LOL
