Shades of the Season: Fall 2012 Polish Guide

Just like the changing of the leaves, fall always brings in new seasonal colors to pamper our nails with. Every major nail polish company, from OPI to Butter London, comes out with a new collection just in time for the season. Some shades are the same every year, but some take us all by surprise. Get ready for fall and see what common colors are trending across all the lines.

Dark red

It’s a color we see every fall, but that does’t make any less fashionable this season. Pictured here is China Glaz’s Adventure Red-y from the On Safari collection. The dark undertones of this color keep it from being too summer-y but will still insure you stand out!

Dusty light brown

Capture the look of fallen leaves this autumn with a dusty light brown color on your tips. OPI’s Berlin There Done That from their Germany collection is a stunning neutral that’s subtle but not boring. Add sparkles or shimmers to this color if you want to spice it up without  negating the neutral effect.

Deep plum/burgundy

Take purple to a whole new level with a deep plum or burgundy polish like Essi’s Recessionista from their new Stylenomics line. This sophisticated color looks almost black and will have people looking twice as they start to notice the colored nuances of the polish.

Pale yellow

As I started researching for this blog post, I was shocked to see how many fall collection were featuring a light yellow color ““ apparently it’s not just for spring anymore! Pictured here is NARS’ 15 Minutes from their upcoming Andy Warhol-inspired collection. Remind yourself of spring flowers all winter long with a beautiful lemon-y yellow on your fingers or toes.

The color of the season: Dark greenish gray

I’m officially calling it: dark greenish gray is the color of the season ““ Essie even named their entire fall collection after their shade! Zoya’s Noot from their Designer collection looks gray in the bottle but features very strong green undertones. Adding a pop of color to the traditional gray crème will help you stand out among a sea of slate-colored fingertips.

About the author
  1. I love this article! All of the pictures of the colors are so useful!! But as someone relatively new to polish-know-how I do always wonder how you can tell which colors to use for your fingernails versus your toenails. Does it matter or all these colors good for both extremities?

    • The general rule is that you should NEVER match your toes to your fingers! Personally, I like to give my toes a summery pop no matter what the season with bright colors. However, I think all these polishes will work on any extremity you so choose to slather it on to! =)
