Music Review Thread

I was looking at the movie review thread in the stickies and I thought it would be a good idea for a music review thread (Sorry if music reviews should just be put in the Movie review thread, I wasn't sure).
I'm always looking for new music and constantly looking for reviews online so I figured we should see if we have any budding journalists here on mut
So, if you hear any new music, good or bad, review it here

Let the reviewing commence haha!

I'm reviewing So What by Pink.
When I first saw the video for So What I thought "Hallelujah! She's back!" (Well actually that was my second thought after how nice her hair is.) The video is funny and 100% like the Pink I remember.
Although some of my favourite Pink songs are her more emotional, meaningful ones like 'I'm Not Dead' and 'Nobody Knows' I actually really love this song.
When I first heard the song I liked it but if I'm honest I wasn't crazy about it. I just thought it was a good pop song. About 20 listens later I'm in love with it and "Na-na-na-na-na-na-na I'm gunna start a fight" is lodged in my brain. I think when I first heard it I was too busy thinking "Please don't tell me it's just a pop song where they repeat words or sounds." (Anyone remember Umberella-ella-ella?) and I didn't realise how infectious it was.
I had actually started to think that maybe this was the only Pink song that I could take or leave. Then I went back and listened again. And again. And again. You get my drift.
The song is so contagious and only Pink could make divorce into such a catchy song. It actually reminded me a lot of her 'Don't Let Me Get Me' days.
When she says she's still a rockstar she sooo is

Re: Music Review Thread

No more reviews? Damn, I need some new music for my ipod! lol

I've got another one. Not that I'm being a thread hogger or anything haha

Another Way To Die- Alicia Keys ft Jack White
Now let me start by saying that I consider myself to be a James Bond fan. I am a major nerd so if at any point during this review you start to think 'Jeez, what's up with her? James Bond sucks!' then I apologize
I was brought up watching the films multiple times and still enjoy them, but for a great Bond film you need a great Bond theme tune.
'Goldfinger' by Shiley Bassey is the first that springs to mind. I even liked the, imo, overly criticised Casino Royal soundtrack 'You Know My Name' by Chris Cornell.
So I was really interested by the names flying around for the Quantum of Solace theme.
Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and others were mentioned. To be quite honest I was a bit surprised when it was announed the theme would come from Alicia Keys and Jack White. Not only are they an un-likely combo but I also thought that seeing as Bond theme's are usually soul-ish or rock Alicia Keys was an interesting choice.

I wanted to like 'Another Way To Die'. I wanted to be wowed. I wanted it to be the best Bond theme ever for hopefully the best Bond film ever.
I didn't. I wasn't. And in my opinion it isn't.
Don't get me wrong. It's not a BAD song. I wouldn't say it was a number one but it's not awful. It's just...blah.
If I'm honest I don't think it's up to the job. It's supposed to be the big film soundtrack of the year and it doesn't have that special quality. It doesn't seem to have any power or oomph behind it and to be it appears to be a half-hearted attempt for a Bond theme.
The song doesn't seem to have any direction and lacks a strong chorus that could save it from being just average. The lyrics are wishy washy and I've been left kind of dissapointed. I wanted a show-stopper moment! I've listened to the song almost 10 times now, hoping that it would grow on me but I couldn't tell you a single line of the song apart from the title of the track 'Another Way To Die' which is in there somewhere.
It's sort of like background music. Something you turn on while you read a book or something but don't really pay attention to. It doesn't leap in your face and wow you and that's what I expected.
Hopefully the film will be much better.
** 2/5 stars.
I'm giving it 2 because like I said it's not an awful song. It's just not the big extravenganza I would have preferred

Re: Music Review Thread

Cool idea, Katie.

Kanye West - Love Lockdown
If you saw the MTV VMA 2008, you've heard of this song.
Personally, I love Kanye singing in this. The beat feels like your heart is thumping along and while the lyrics are eh, it easily translate from a chill song to a song that can be easily remixed and dance too at the clubs. It's catchy, fun, new... really, Kanye can be a big headed egotistical jerk. But he's a big headed egotistical jerk who makes great music.

When I Grow Up-The Pussycat Dolls review
Maybe this is a biased review 'cos I've never liked PCD. I've always thought they were kinda pointless as a band considering there's only one singer in the band and the rest are just backing singers who dance around.
As for 'When I Grow Up' it's actually not their worst song imo.
I won't be rushing to download it but it does have some redeeming qualities that make it better than 'Don't Cha' and 'Beep'.
I like the "Be careful what you wish for 'cos you just might get it" bit but on the other hand I hate the rest of the dolls singing "Ha ha ha ha" after Nicole singing a lyric.
It's catchy. One thing I don't like is that it seems to be based on the same beat as the majority of their other songs.
Despite what I say though, it'll be in the Top 10 without a doubt.
PCD songs get into people's heads and they get people talking about the lyrics and the music videos. In fact 'When I Grow Up' has already sparked debate in my Media class over whether it says "I wanna have groupies" or "I wanna have boobies" so even though I don't particularly like the song I've still been talking about it which I guess is the whole point.
Rating: *** 3/5 stars. 'Cos it's not their worst song by a long shot.

Re: Music Review Thread

I seem to only be reviewing pop songs lol I'm not doing it intentionally. I'm just reviewing new releases.
Burnin' Up- The Jonas Brothers.
Before today I'd never heard a Jonas Brothers song. Yup, that's right. NEVER.
I'd always assumed they were some cheesy manufactured pop group from the same bunch as all the other disney kids.
I have to say...I was pleasantly surprised! They have a nice sound and really nice voices and they don't sound as cheesy as I'd assumed (although the music video is slightly cheesy ). I don't know whether it was just my shock horror at it not being corny as hell or not but I did actually quite like it!
Not what I expected at all.
Although that little guest rap near the end is awful and embarrassing, like most impromptu rapping spots in songs. Unless it's a very good rapper they don't work. I wish someone would work this out because I'm sick of cringing when some random person starts rapping and it doesn't fit in with the song at all.
Apart from that, good song!
4/5 (I'm prepared to overlook the rap )

Hot N Cold- Katy Perry
I wasn't the biggest fan of 'I Kissed A Girl' (ahem, understatement) but 'Hot N Cold' is definatley better. It's a shame it has no chance of doing better than 'I Kissed A Girl' because controversy sells records and this song isn't controversial.
When the 80's disco beats kicked in I was skeptical. It was kinda cringey at first and don't get me started on Katy Perry singing all the verses in a out of breath voice that sounds like she ran all the way to the recording (you've got a good voice! why try and do the whole weird breathy thing?). But when the coruses kick in it's actually very good. Great up tempo tune and really catchy. The verses let it down a bit though.

(I can see myself going on a bit of a reviewing spree today )
The Man Who Can't Be Moved-The Script
This review could be so short. In four words I can tell you why you should listen to this song.
This song is beautiful.
There lol But I think I kinda need to back that statement up.
The lyrics are amazing. The song is about a guy who goes back to the corner of the street where he met his ex girlfriend and won't move in case she changes her mind and decides to come and find him.
"Maybe you'll come back to the place that we meet and you'll see me waiting for you on the corner of the street."
It's a down tempo song but all I can say is that it's amazing.

If I Were A Boy- Beyonce
I noticed that this song was getting a bit of stick in the comments on youtube with some people saying they hope it's not going to be her official new single.
I hope it is. The song is so heartfelt and Beyonce's voice on her ballads is just amazing.
The song is a bit sad but Beyonce makes you believe every word (unlike some really cold sounding singers out there). The song is about how she'd treat a girl better if she was a boy than how boys have treated her,
"If I were a boy, I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl, I swear I'd be a better man.
Id listen to her, Cause I know how it hurts"
Beautiful song, one of my fave Beyonce songs ever.

Womanizer- Britney Spears
Oh yeah, Britney's back!
Womanizer is so catchy (I've been walking around all day mumbling "womanizer, womanizer, womanizer" randomly to myself ) and it has a great beat.
I even like the verses. Awesome song with an awesome video.
Britney looks great in the video and I like the image changes like in the video for Toxic (love the red hair!).

Beyonce - If I Were A Boy

Loved it the first time I heard it. A lot like Ciara's "Like A Boy" but Beyonce's version is a ballad as oppose to a dance. Really interesting lyrics, it starts with her saying if she were a boy and she would do this and that and then it turns into but you're just a boy and of course you would do this and that, you never learn type of stuff. I really like it. Although she can turn it down with the screaming but meh.

Re: Music Review Thread

Single Ladies - Beyonce
I didn't really like this song the first time I heard it, I thought the beat was a bit bland and there wasn't much of a tune, but after seeing this song combined with the music video I love it! It's a really dancy, up tempo song and so so catchy. The video is just of her and two other girls dancing but it is really well directed and the choreography is amazing, I could watch it over and over. It's so different to 'If I Were A Boy', but I love it!

Kevin Rudolph - Let It Rock

Hoooomygod. I'm loving this song hard core. With Lil' Wayne featured, it's a really good club song with a catchy chorus.

Up-The Saturdays
I really hope this single gets the airplay it deserves because The Saturdays are fast becoming my favourite girlband.
The song is very catchy and has a great dance beat and all the girls have really nice voices.
One of the things I like about the band is that unlike most girlbands their vocals work together and there isn't one of them trying to out-do the others. In other words, it isn't a vocal cat fight.
I like this song a lot better than their 1st single and I hope the next single is just as good.
Oh and the video is awesome! The coloured tights are so cool!

The Promise-Girls Aloud
Let's start with the positives. I like the video. A lot. The 60's costumes are awesome.
But no matter how much I love the video I can't help but think that the song isn't their best. It's more a chance for some serious posing than a song. I quite like the verses (I love Sarah's solo! They should give her solo's more often!) but the chorus seems a bit lack-luster and I had to have a few listens before I understood what they were saying.
It's good, I'm not saying it isn't. Just not my favourite from them (Jump is my favourite)

Wire To Wire-Razorlight
So, I'm biased. I'm a major Razorlight fan. I've practically been counting down the days until their next release and it hasn't dissapointed me. I love it. I love the tune. I love the lyrics.
Of course there's the whining critics who hate Razorlight. Or course there is, they're a successful band, look at Coldplay they sell millions of records and have sold out stadium tours and there are still people who call them 'bland'.
I was expecting the criticisms as soon as Wire To Wire was released. "It's boring" "It's the same as___(insert song here)" "Johnny Borrell is an ass".
I appreciate their opinions but...they're wrong haha

Just Can't Get Enough-The Saturdays
I love this band, they're the only girl band I like at the minute. They have great voices and tons of personality.
This is a cover a a Depeche Mode song that they're singing to raise money for Comic Relief and it's great!
Really fun and catchy and the video is really good!

Re: Music Review Thread

I didn't know we had a music thread! But, I'll admit that I am a little obsessed with Rihanna (the girl is turning into a femme fatale!!) So, I been following her every move until the release of the new alabum entilted "Rated R"

Since her breakup, I honestly feel her music has more depth and meaning. The newly acclaimed "controversial" record made by the pop icon entitled Russian Roulette had my ears buzzing from the first time I heard in air on the radio. Very disturbing at first, but as I stated before her choice in wordplay has alot of depth.

Disclaimer: The following video may be disturbing to most. Viewer discretion is advised.

Re: Music Review Thread

Enya - the Very Best of CD+DVD edition
(Warner Music).

This edition was just out in time for Christmas, so you might have not seen it yet.
Being a fan of Enya but never owning a single album of her (apart from Paint the sky with stars, another Best Of which sadly has been used too many times), i took this opportunity to have all her classic songs on one album.
The cover is pretty, black cover with Enya wearing a black and red dress. It opens like a book, with two pockets for the cd and DVD, and in between a booklet retracing her career, with beautiful pictures. It's also an album in which Enya picked the songs she wanted, as she explains in the booklet. That way you don't get yet another best of CD made by the company, which always feels impersonal.

The CD contains 22 songs :
1. Trains and winter rains
2. My! My! Times flies!
3. Stars and midnight blue
4.Amarantine
5. Sumiregusa
6. The river sings
7. If I could be where you are
8. Wild child
9. Only time
10. Drifting
11. Flora's secret
12. Fallen embers
13. One by one
14. Pax deorum
15. Athair ar neamh
16. Anywhere is
17. Orinoco flow
18. Watermark
19. Boadicea
20. May it be
21. Caribbean blue
22. Aniron (LOTR)

So you get pretty much all the successful songs, except for The Celts, which you only get in the DVD. It's one of the rare albums i can listen to from track one to track 22, even if i like some songs less than others. It's very relaxing and peaceful, it's a nice ambient album.

The dvd contains videoclips, two making of (Caribbean blue and Only time) and also a (too) short documentary which is very nice, it retraces the career of Enya, and the process of creating songs.
The videoclips are:
1. Orinoco flow
2.Caribbean blue
3. Only time
4. The Celts
5. Amarantine
6. Trains and winter rains
7. Evening falls
8. Anywhere is
9. It's in the rain
10. Wild child
11. Only if
12. Storms in Africa
13. On my way home

So the DVD completes the CD as it gives you other songs that were not on it. It's also nice to see visually a song being played.

Anyway, to make a long review short, BUY IT !! You will not be disappointed.

Re: Music Review Thread

i'd just like to point out that if the only thing the members do is sing, they are not a 'band', but a vocal group. the dictionary definition of a band includes members that play instruments.

now, technically, you could use the word 'band' in the context, "they are a band of girls that sing for entertainment" but that is the only way.

music is my passion, I might contribute here...but seeing what has already been posted, i don't see anything i would post to be of interest to anyone.

Re: Music Review Thread

I really like the new eminem song with rihanna, I don't know the name but its good! I listen to a lot of older music from the early 90s to 2000s but another song I really like is,

Passion pit- sleepy head.

at first i didnt know it was an actual band, but it is and the song is very catchy.
