All About Hair Oil

Hair oils may seem counter-productive: normally you want to get rid of oily hair, not add to it! But hair oils are highly recommended by many famous stylists. What’s the hype all about, though? Do hair oils actually do anything – could they damage your hair altogether? Find out the answers to all that and more with this helpful article. Plus, let us know what brand of hair oil you like to use in the comments!

What are hair oils?

A hair oil is basically what it sounds like – oil you put in your hair! Hair oils were first introduced to the beauty industry in the 80s, back when you could get a hot oil treatment at saloons. Hair oils now days usually aren’t heated, and they’re super easy to bring home in a bottle. One of the more common ingredients for these hair serums is argan oil, although you can also often find pomegranate seed extract, coconut oil, or macadamia nut oil.

What are the benefits?

Does your hair seem dry and lifeless? If so, you might really benefit from using a hair oil. They promise to make your hairdo swishy and shiny, as if you’ve just walked out of the saloon. Even better, hair oils can help smooth itchy scalp due to irritation; some beauty enthusiasts claim that using hair oil can make your hair grow faster!

What are the disadvantages?

Although there are lots of benefits to hair oils, there are some trade-offs. If your hair oil is silicone based, as many hair products on the market are, you’ll find that the oil will actually keep much-needed moisture locked out. Plus, silicone doesn’t really fix damaged hair; instead, it smoothes down frizz temporarily, only giving the appearance of healthy hair. Another problem with hair oil? Be careful with your heating products! Oil is a flammable substance, and it could lead to burned hair. (Trust me: I used an oil treatment right before blow-drying, and a little chunk of hair burned off!)

How do I use hair oils?

Instructions will vary based on which brand you use, but in general, simply add a few drops into the palms of your hand. Rub your hands together and work through your strands. Most can be applied to damp or dry hair! Need a few recommendations? Orofluido’s Hair Elixir promises to smooth down flyaways and is popular with Birchbox subscribers. MoroccanOil is another popular treatment and doesn’t leave hair greasy looking.
